Sightings for Sunday January 29th

Pincourt: My first ever Northern Shrike (Pie-grièche grise) (click photo to enlarge) sighting happened this morning in my backyard. I noticed a bird hovering mometarily over a line of cedar hedges and saw when it perched on a clothes line it was a Northern Shrike. I managed to get a couple of pictures of it but at the distance I had to enlarge the photos to see for sure it was what I thought it to be. It appeared to be going after some house sparrows as there are many house sparrows in that cedar bush.

Also spotted today: House sparrows - 10, Northern Cardinals - 3 (two males, one female), American goldfinch - 4, Blue Jays - 6, European starlings - 10, Downy woodpecker - 1, Black capped chickadees - 6, House finch - 4 (two males, two females), American Robin - 1, Coopers hawk - 1, Dark eyed junco - 8, American crow - 4

Moineaux domestiques - 10, Cardinals rouge - 3 (deux mâles et une femme), Chardonneret jaune - 4, Geai bleu - 6, étourneau sansonnet - 10, Pic mineur - 1, Mésange à tête noire - 6, Roselin familier - 4 (2 mâles , 2 femelles), Merle d'Amérique - 1, Coopers hawk - 1, Junco ardoisé - 8, Corneille d'Amérique - 4

Montréal: We saw a Northern Shrike in our alleyway, located in the Villeray district of Montreal. She devoured a sparrow. It was observed for several minutes by four experienced observers, between 2:49 & 3:15 p.m. Unfortunately I did not get a picture.

Beauharnois: On the canal, besides Common goldeneye (about 75), there were a few hundred Common mergansers, 1 Common loon and a Long-tailed duck (a young male). At the top of the Larocque bridge, faithful to his post, the Peregrine falcon scanned the horizon.
