Bird Protection Quebec "Field trip Report"

2013 Summer Series of Birding - Trip #2

The weather cooperated nicely yesterday as 17 birders participated in the Summer Series field trip to Ile-Bizard. Clouds throughout most of the morning kept the heat and humidity down, making for a pleasant, long walk through the park. Be prepared though if you are heading through the wooded areas of the park as the mosquitoes are quite large and quite hungry.

There is a lot of evidence of breeding going on in the park with several nests visible and several young birds throughout the park.

Here is our list of 53 species. Mary Ellen and Audrey stayed over for lunch and were able to add two additional species to our trip list (Double-crested Cormorant & White-breasted Nuthatch) (Cormoran à aigrettes et Sittelle à poitrine blanche)

Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip"

2013 Summer Series of Birding - Trip #1 - Saturday, June 22

Ville LaSalle, Parc des Rapides  MAP

Seeing as a number of the recent outings in the spring were driving trips, some quite a distance from Montreal, I thought we would kick off the summer with a local, but always interesting outing, giving everyone an opportunity to come to an easy-to-get-to destination. We will be heading to Parc des Rapides in Ville LaSalle. Here are the details:

Start Time: 8:00 a.m.
Meet in the parking lot at Parc des Rapides, corner of LaSalle Blvd. and 6th Avenue in Ville LaSalle (just east of Bishop Power Blvd).

Driving Instructions: Take Hwy 20 to the Blvd. de la Vérendrye exit. Heading west on de la Vérendrye, follow it to Bishop Power Blvd/Shevchenko. Turn left on Bishop Power Blvd and follow to the waterfront on LaSalle Blvd. Turn left on LaSalle Blvd. and follow it to the parking lot at the corner of 6th Avenue. Parking is free.

From the West Island another option is Highway 20 to the Angrignon Blvd. exit. Follow Angrignon Blvd which changes name to des Trinitaires at Newman Blvd. Continue on des Trinitaires to de la Verendrye Blvd. Turn right on de la Verendrye and follow it to Bishop Power Blvd/Shevchenko. Turn left on to Bishop Power and follow the instructions above.

Public transportation is available from the Angrignon Metro station. Check metro and bus routes for full details.

This will be a half-day outing exploring the park and the waterfront in LaSalle and Verdun.

If you have questions, please contact me by phone on the BPQ phone line at 514-637-2141, or by e-mail. - Sheldon

Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip Report"

Southwestern Quebec Early Solstice Field Trip

Wayne Grubert and I co-led the early solstice trip this morning covering 58 kms. from Rang de Trois south of Ormstown to Doullers archaeological site where we made the species count of what had been an excellent trip in great and varied habitat. The trip was early in two senses of the word as it began at 5:30 a.m. and also was a week before the summer solstice.

Number of participants: 12
Weather: a perfect June morning from 8 degrees C. to 22 degrees C. at noon when we stopped after 6 and a half hours of uninterrupted birding.

Bird of the Day: Unquestionably it was Golden-winged Warbler. There were at least 2 singing males on Biggar Road and eventually everyone in our group had scope views of this beautiful and much desired bird. It was a lifer for at least 3 participants. The only dissenting vote for Bird of the Day went to the female Ruffed Grouse who afforded good views as she stood for a few minutes on Gowan Rd near Massey. There were 3 chicks which, after their mother went into the forest, were left on the other side of the road. Even though they were tiny, they chose to fly across the road rather than walk it to safety.

Other highlights: Eastern Meadowlarks singing in many places; an Upland Sandpiper posing at length on a post on Gore Rd.; Scarlet Tanagers singing and showing well from the heights; Eastern Towhees singing duets with Golden-winged Warblers on Biggar; Pileated Woodpecker affording great flight views on Gore Rd; Eastern Bluebirds flying around their nest boxes at several places.

It was a splendid trip in excellent company . . thanks to Wayne as always for his great leadership (and the maps) and to everyone who shared in great birding in a wonderful area.

All the best for the summer season . . . over to you, Sheldon . . . Martin

There are a number of lights and turns on this route (see a map). Stay on 201 beyond Ormstown. Turn right on 3ème Rang and wait there for the group. This is a driving trip; carpooling is recommended. This trip will explore some of the roads of southwestern Quebec in the Ormstown-Huntingdon area. We are starting early because some of the roads are busy and parking can be difficult. Looking for birds of the forests and of open country. Possible species include Yellow-throated Vireo, Golden-winged Warbler, Field Sparrow, Eastern Bluebird as well as more common passerines. Half day. Possibility of extension into the early afternoon.

Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip Report" June 8

Surprisingly ten people showed up for yesterday's field trip to Rigaud Mountain considering the drizzly, damp, cool conditions which really didn't let up for most of the morning. The breeze, the pitter-patter of rain on leaves and a few of the strange Rigaud Mountain bird dialects made a few identifications by ear difficult. The upside was that temperatures which never went above 15°C meant that the mosquitoes and deer flies were kept to a minimum.

We spent the morning exploring a trail from L'Erabliere St Henri northward to Lac des Castors. Not a long walk but it covers some interesting forested habitat with small clearings interspersed. The small lake at the end is difficult to see because the surrounding vegetation has grown up over the last few years but we were able to see a three great blue heron nests, one of which was occupied. It does seem that the number of nests is significantly reduced from previous years probably due to the dead trees in which they were located having fallen into the pond.

Most of the area we covered is now within a 110 hectare area under the protection of Nature-Action Québec.

Our highlight of the day was a singing Mourning Warbler who stayed in one place for several minutes while we watched. Two American Kestrels were also noteworthy as they put on an aerial display near the parking lot on our way out. They seemed to have a nest in the immediate vicinity although we could not discover exactly where.

Our complete list of 41 species seen and/or heard includes: Canada Goose (Bernache du Canada) - 3, Great Blue Heron (Grand Héron) - 1, American Kestrel (Crécerelle d'Amérique) - 2, Rock Pigeon (Pigeon Biset) - 1, Mourning Dove (Touterelle Triste) - 2, Belted Kingfisher Martin (Pêcheur d'Amerique) - 1, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Pic Maculé) - 4, Eastern Wood-Pewee (Piou de l'Est) - 4, Alder Flycatcher (Moucherolle des Aulnes) - 2, Least Flycatcher (Moucherolle tchébec) - 2, Eastern Phoebe (Moucherolle Phébi) - 1, Great-crested Flycatcher (Tyran Huppé) - 2, Eastern Kingbird (Tyran tritri) - 1, Warbling Vireo (Viréo mélodieux) - 1, Red-eyed Vireo (Viréo aux yeux rouges) - 7, Blue Jay (Geai Bleu) - 6, American Crow (Corneille d'Amérique) - 4, Common Raven (Grand Corbeau) - 1, Black-capped Chickadee (Mésange à tête noire) - 3, Veery (Grive fauve) - 8, Wood Thrush (Grive des bois) - 1, Gray Catbird (Moqueur Chat) - 2, European Starling (Étourneau sansonnet) - 2, Cedar Waxwing (Jaseur d'Amérique)- 10, Chestnut-sided Warbler (Paruline à Flancs Marron) - 12, Black-throated Blue Warbler (Paruline Bleue) - 4, Black-and-white Warbler (Paruline Noir et Blanc) - 3, American Redstart (Paruline Flamboyante) - 1, Ovenbird (Paruline Couronnée) - 6, Mourning Warbler (Paruline Triste) - 1, Common Yellowthroat (Paruline Masquée) - 3, Chipping Sparrow (Bruant Familier) - 1, Song Sparrow (Bruant Chanteur) - 8, Swamp Sparrow (Bruant des Marais) - 2, White-throated Sparrow (Bruant à Gorge Blanche) - 5, Rose-breasted Grosbeak (Cardinal à poitrine rose) - 3, Indigo Bunting (Passerin Indigo) - 1, Red-winged Blackbird (Carouge à Épaulettes) - 12, Common Grackle (Quiscale Bronzé) - 6, Brown-headed Cowbird (Vacher à Tête Brun) - 1, American Goldfinch (Chardonneret Jaune) - 6

Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip Report" June 1

8 birders turned out for the field trip at the Lac St-Francois Reserve in Dundee, Quebec today. It was hot and humid, but occasional cloud cover and some cooling breezes made the morning enjoyable, as did the birds.

We completed the day with 58 species with the highlight being the Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers at the Great Egret Walk, their second consecutive year nesting at this site.

In general, the species count was good, but the volume of many of the species was quite low. The absence of ducks in the marshes was somewhat odd. The only duck species today was Mallard, with just two of them seen in a fly-by. Swallows, normally very active over the marshes, were also few in numbers.
Overall, the majority of the birds were somewhat quiet as well. Perhaps the heat had something to do with that, plus there seemed to be a lot of birds moving around carrying food, so perhaps many of the birds were busy taking care of new families.

Patrick Laniel, at the reserve welcome centre, indicated that the Sandhill Cranes were present at the Great Egret Walk, but we were unable to locate them today.

Here is our species list for the day: Canada Goose 60, Mallard 2, Pied-billed Grebe 4, Double-crested Cormorant 6, Great Blue Heron 6, Great Egret 4, Green Heron 1, Turkey Vulture 10, Osprey 4, Bald Eagle 1, Northern Harrier 2, Killdeer 3, Wilson's Snipe 3, Ring-billed Gull 8, Common Tern 2, Mourning Dove 6, Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1, Downy Woodpecker 1, Northern Flicker 1, Pileated Woodpecker 2, Eastern Wood-Pewee 1, Alder Flycatcher 6, Willow Flycatcher 10, Eastern Phoebe 3, Great Crested Flycatcher 6, Eastern Kingbird 10, Warbling Vireo 6, Red-eyed Vireo 4, Blue Jay 1, American Crow 12, Common Raven 1, Tree Swallow 12, Barn Swallow 6, Black-capped Chickadee 4, White-breasted Nuthatch 1, House Wren 1, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 2, Eastern Bluebird 1, Veery 12, American Robin 6, Gray Catbird 2, European Starling 4, Cedar Waxwing 25, Yellow Warbler 25+, Chestnut-sided Warbler 1, American Redstart 3, Northern Waterthrush 3, Common Yellowthroat 8, Savannah Sparrow 1, Song Sparrow 12, Swamp Sparrow 12, Northern Cardinal 1, Rose-breasted Grosbeak 3, Bobolink 6, Red-winged Blackbird 50+, Common Grackle 30, Baltimore Oriole 6, American Goldfinch 8
