Sightings for Sunday October 30th

Victoriaville: The McGill Wildlife Club led by myself and a visiting birder, Daniele Mitchell, had a great day at the Beaudet Reservoir today! We arrived at 3:00pm to see the 10's of thousands of Snow Geese (Oie des neiges) that were there. Highlights include: Lesser Black-backed Gull (Goéland brun) (spotted by Daniele Mitchell), 3+ Cackling Geese (Bernache de Hutchins) (all separate), one Ross's Goose (Oie de Ross) (spotted by Daniele Mitchell), Ring-necked Ducks, Common Goldeneye, Lesser Scaup, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser and a Rough-legged Hawk (Fuligules à collier, Garrots à oeil d'or, Petits fuligules, Harle couronné, Grand Harle et une Buse pattue).

Saint-Annne-de-Bellevue On Saturday - samedi, Daniele and I did a little birding at the Morgan Arboretum and the MBO. Highlights were Barred Owl (Chouette rayée) near the Arbo. entrance, Fox Sparrow (Bruant fauve) at the feeders and Northern Shrike (Pie-grièche grise) at the MBO. - Alex Stone
------------------------------------------------------------------
I was leading a field trip beginning at Fort Chambly and ending in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Of the approximately 35 species observed, The most unusual were: -1 Lesser black-backed gull near Fort Chambly, on a rock in the middle of the water. The color of the legs left no doubt as well as coat color, one could compare it to that of Black-backed Gull not to far away.
-1 Pair of Redhead, opposite St. Athanasius church in Iberville
-1 Female Black Scoter, seen by the shore under the Marchand Bridge
-a group of Bonaparte's Gulls at the Chambly water treatment ponds (inaccessible but you could see the flock in flight over the pond, from a nearby hill) -a group of Northern Shoveler at the same site

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Lac de Roxton Pond (lake): Approximately 40,000 Snow geese around noon time. 4 Ross's goose, one with a yellow collar with a V (horizontal) and EY (vertical), two hybrid geese, Snow goose X Ross's Goose, 2 Cackling goose, 12 mallards, 3 Common Mergansers 34 Hooded Merganser, 20 Ring-billed Gulls, 2 Herring Gulls, 1 American Crow

Sightings for Friday October 28th

Victoriaville: This morning before going to work, a few minutes observation at réservoir Beaudet. Both Ross' geese were present, one adult and one immature, the two birds were not together. A few minutes later I spotted a hybrid goose (Ross goose x Snow Goose). For two days the Black scoters have made an appearance. When I was about to pack up, 60 000 Snow geese were left at the same time, it was very beautiful, but dangerous for the bombing.

Granby, CENTRE D'INTERPRETATION DE LA NATURE DU LAC-BOIVIN

This Saturday's spontaneous destination field trip will be held at the CENTRE D'INTERPRETATION DE LA NATURE DU LAC-BOIVIN, in Granby, Quebec. This is a great spot to visit, particularly at this time of the year with the changing leaves.

This is a walking trip, with extensive trails throughout the park and an observation tower overlooking Lac Boivin. The park offers a variety of habitats including the lake itself, wooded trails and areas of open fields and brushy areas. There should be a good selection of species, including migrating songbirds, ducks, geese and, hopefully, a few surprises. Bring along some bird seed as the chickadees, white-breasted and red-breasted nuthatches are very friendly here and always looking to feed from the hands of the visitors!

Sightings for Tuesday October 25th

Montréal: During my lunch walk, I noted 28 Eastern Bluebirds at Mount Royal Cemetery. They were easy to count because they are all passed over to me screaming, apparently fleeing a predator (most likely the Cooper's Hawk still lurking in the cemetery).

- Eve-Lyne Samson

Saw-whet banding at MBO

Since the start of our Northern Saw-whet Owl Migration Monitoring program on September 26th, we have banded 109 Saw-whets and recaptured 4 individuals from other banding stations (Ontario, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Massachusetts). We have also recaptured two individuals that were banded at MBO last year.
Our program continues until mid-November. MBO's intrepid owl banders, Bob Barnhurst and Simon Duval, hope to surpass last year's record of 122 owls.

A quick reminder that you can help MBO continue this program by adopting a Northern Saw-whet Owl. One of the two owls we recaptured was adopted last year; we reported the encounter to the adoptive "parents" and noted that their owl is clearly thriving. For more details, visit http://migrationresearch.org/mbo/adoptanowl.html.
