Montréal: This morning at the Botanical Gardens, there was a small "hot spot" behind la maison de l'arbres along the fence between the Garden and the Park Maisonnneuve. Among the species seen: Blackpoll Warbler, Wilson's, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Common yellowthroat, Canada and an adult female Hooded warbler. The Mourning Warbler was heard but not seen. Also, an Eastern Wood-pewee

- Michael Bridger

------------------------------------------------------------
Westmount Summit park:  A couple of Boreal flycatchers, one of them quite a surprise to me: an Olive-sided Flycatcher (Moucherolle à côtés olive)...certainly the fist I'd observed in that location. Also, several Yellow-bellied Flycatchers (Moucherolles à ventre jaune). (At least 3, perhaps 4). Besides these, in an hour and a half, I saw and heard 28 additional species, but nothing not already reported. Scarlet Tanagers, Great Crested Flycatchers, Red-eyed Vireos, black-throated Blue Warblers, and 2 Indigo Buntings (Tangara écarlate, Tyran huppé,  Viréo aux yeux rouges, Paruline bleue, et 2 Passerines Indigo) were in FULL voice the entire time. - Ian Turner

Bird Protection Qujebec "Field Trip Report" Saturday May 24

18 birders gathered at 7 am in Granville, with a few admitting that they only realized late last night that the field trip was starting that early...

We were lucky enough to have a very nice weather all morning. the first showers starting only 30 minuts after we ended.

We first birded wooden area along chemin Falloon, before heading to the more mixed habitats and open fields along chemin Avoca. Leafs are definitely out, and birding was not easy. More birds were heard than seen, a good field practice for all! bugs are out too, but overall still bearable.

We nevertheless enjoyed good views of a number of species, including a bittern desplaying in a wet field, as well as bobolinks, meadowlark and broad-winged hawk to name a few. Total number of species observed or heard reached 72. - Frédéric Hareau

Saint-Blaise: A Snowy egret PHOTO is present in Saint-Blaise between 46ave and 50ave. It was reported to me by an ornithologist there, while I was trying to find the Glossy Ibis ... Without success!

Sightings for Sunday May 10

Longueuil, parc Michel-Chartrand: Whip-poor-will (Engoulevent bois-pourri) PHOTONormand Tétreault, Samuel Denault
--------------------------------------------------------------
This is not exactly a bird-sighting, but related. This morning, in the Westmount Summit woods, I noted some triumphant individual(s) have bravely destroyed the Eastern Phoebes' nest on the little bird i.d. sheltered poster, and have proudly displayed their twig-encrusted bludgeon of destruction as a testament to their victory.
Other than that, two and a half hours of eerily silent woods.  Nary a cheep, a peep, or a dee-dee-dee!
(Has anyone any comment on birding in this location since the end of April? I'd been going regularly from February through April, and while a BIT quiet, it was not alarmingly so.) - Ian Turner

Chateuaguay, Ile Saint-Bernard, 60 species: I was going to go birding early this morning, but as soon as I stepped outside it started to rain. So back inside I went. An hour later looking out the kitchen window I saw a Black-throated blue warbler, a Yellow-rumped warbler and 2 Northern parula at the same time. So rain or not I decided to go out. It only drizzled off and on a few times, so it worked out fine.

The trails are better than last week, but you still cannot walk all the way around the island. Because it is flooded in areas on the Chateauguay river side of the island. Tom Long

Sightings for Thursday May 8

Montréal: l'île de la Visitation Nature  Parrk . Again this morning another major Canada Geese (Bernache du Canada) migration-movement flying over the park (2000+). Highlight of the morning was the discovery of a Prairie Warbler (Paruline des prés) (adult male) at 8h05 (trail next to Rue Brousseau). All details (plumage) and behaviour (tail bobbing) as well as it's distinctive call which was what got my attention, were well observed for at least 3 minutes, until it flew off. Other warblers were also seen, like Yellow-rumped Warbler, (Paruline à croupion jaune)(9), Ovenbird (Paruline couronnée) (1),  Nashville warbler (Paruline à joues grises) Blue-headed Vireo and Warbling Vireo (Viréo à tête bleue et Viréo mélodieux) - Joel Coutu

Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip"

Saturday, May 10 – samedi 10 mai
Philipsburg, George H. Montgomery Bird Sanctuary
http://www.pqspb.org/sanctuaries.html
Guide: Nicholas Acheson e-mail

Please note the earlier than usual start time for this trip and the reduced half-day duration.
7:30 a.m. Meet at the defunct Motel Frontière. From Montreal take the Champlain Bridge, Highway 10 east to exit 22, Highway 35 south to St. Jean to join Highway 133 south to Philipsburg. Now that the motel has been demolished, the location is not easy to see from the southbound side of the road so continue towards the border crossing. Immediately before the border buildings take the well-marked U-turn on the left to cross over to the northbound side of the road. Look on your right for the large white sign telling drivers to fasten their seat belts – the entrance to the old motel site and the parking area is immediately beyond it. Note that there are two gravelled entrances – do NOT take the first, as it is washed out and impassable; the second entry is excellent. Good choice of trails from long and strenuous to short and easy. Looking for migrating passerines, waterfowl and hawks. Half day.

Bird Protection Qujebec "Field Trip Report" Saturday May 3

Lac St-Francois National Reserve, Dundee

What started out looking like we might get rained on turned out to be just a cloudy, overcast day, with a couple of sunny breaks. It was obvious to see the proof of a delayed spring as just about all the trees were completely bare of any buds or emerging leaves.

14 birders participated in today's field trip and succeeded in finding a total of 51 species. It was very quiet in some areas today, particularly on the wooded trail section of the reserve close to the U.S. border. Still we were very pleased to get good looks at a nesting pair of Sandhill Cranes on the Great Egret Walk and after some patience, a nice look at an Eastern Towhee at the intersection of Highway 132 and Watson. Three additional species were seen by Doug Fisher prior to the group arriving at the reserve. They were Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal and Belted Kingfisher. - Sheldon Harvey
