when we had one of our most productive "Summer Series" outings ever, with a

total of 66 species. We will meet up at the Hudson Inn exploring areas in

St-Lazare and points west out to the Quebec/Ontario border, then heading north,

wrapping up at the Carillon Dam at Pointe-Fortune, Quebec. Here are the

details.

MEETING PLACE: Hudson Inn parking lot at Exit 17 off of Highway 40.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS TO MEETING SPOT: Take the Trans-Canada Highway 40 (direction Ottawa) to Exit 17 - Highway 201 Montee Lavigne / Hudson. Meet in the parking area outside the Hudson Inn complex. We should attempt to carpool from this location.

ITINERARY: From the Hudson Inn, we will drive south on Highway 201 into St-Lazare checking out chemin de Fied & Montee Ste-Angelique, looking particularly for field and grassland birds, etc. We then head west towards the Quebec/Ontario border along ch. Ste-Marie, into Ontario to Lemieux Road & La Grande Montee Road. Here we will be again be looking for grassland birds, including Upland Sandpipers, Bobolinks, Meadowlarks, etc. We will continue north on La Grande Montee to Pointe Fortune and visit the Carillon Dam at Pointe-Fortune, where various gulls, ducks and shorebirds are often seen.

Rosemere: I was lucky to see a male HOODED WARBLER in the Marais Tylee in Rosemere (Lower Laurentians), about 6:45 p.m. today. I was able to observe it until about 7:35 p.m. she was still there when I left. It fed in the shrub layer directly adjacent to the Rivière des Milles-Îles and was part of a group consisting of migratory warblers, Magnolia, American redstart, a Nashville Warbler, and a Black-throated blue Warbler.

Le Marais Tylee, indicated by a sign, is accessible by the Community Center parking of the City of Rosemere (202 Chemin de la Grande-Côte, Rosemere). At the bottom of this parking lot, we must take the boardwalk to the end, then continue along the path. Hooded Warbler moving along the first 200 m of the trail that borders the river. In addition to this scarcity, the little-known Tylee Marais also contains other species of interest and well worth a visit.

Missing Merlin

I spent the day at the Biosphere representing Environment Canada's migratory bird division. A few hardy souls showed up (including a few intrepid BPQers), but one of the most important visitors disappeared shortly after arriving: UQROP's rehabilitated Merlin got spooked and broke free from its jesses. It is a captive-raised bird and will not likely do very well in the wild, so it's critical that we do everything we can to find it. The bird's trainer scoured the park and the Biosphere's team broadcasted Merlin calls for hours to no avail. I thought it might be a good idea to ask anyone in the area to keep their eyes peeled for a Merlin flying around with jesses still attached. If you see such a bird, please email and I'll send it on to the trainer at UQROP.

Thanks so much,

Marie-Anne Hudson

Sightings for Saturday May14th

Montréal, Parc Mont-Royal: 51 sp., most notably 16 warblers - Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Black-and-White, Tennessee, Nashville, Orange-crowned, Yellow, Bay-breasted, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, Northern Parula, Common Yellowthroat, Ovenbird, American Redstart

16 parulines - à croupion jaune, bleue, verte à gorge noire, Blackburnian, noir et blanc, obscure, à joues grises, verdâtres, jaunes, à poitrine baie, à tête cendrée, à flancs marron, à collier, masquée, couronnée, flamboyante - David Kaiser

This morning, from 10:00 to 12:00, I went to the Parc du Mont-Royal with Matt Medler. Immediately behind the chalet in the open grassy area, we saw an interesting group of warblers. After observing two or three warblers Matt says he has been a Cerulean Warbler. Because of the low light, it was impossible to see the colors of the bird. But the narrow and well defined on the upper breast white, non-striped, two white wing bars, stripes on the sides, the facial pattern and short tail we had the markings for this species. Unfortunately the bird did not sing.

The group as a whole has moved constantly, but within the vicinity of the grassy area. So we stayed in this area for the duration of the visit. In the end, there seemed to be warblers everywhere in the trees of this grassy area.

We finally found 15 species of warblers: Northern parula (2), Tennessee (1), Nashville (1), Chestnut-sided (2), Palm (10), Cape May (3), Black-thraoted blue (5) , Cerulean (1), Blackburnian (5), Yellow-rumped (50 +), Black-throated green (7), Bay-breasted (1), black and white (4), American redstart (1) Ovenbird (4 ).

- Matt Medler, Diane Demers

Victoriaville: Early this morning I went to reservoir Beaudet and found that the rain had slowed migration of certain species of waterfowl. I counted 36 Brant and 14 Common eider, unusual birds for the reservoir. Also ten Long-tailed duck and a small group of White-winged Scoters, the rain not only has disadvantages.
