Sightings for Monday July 15

Terrebonne: Several observers were present this morning to see the American white pelican (PHOTO) in Terrebonne, on Ile Saint-Jean. I first saw it around 9:15 on the Rivière-des-Milles-Iles near the Highway 25 bridge. Shortly after my arrival, he quickly flew to the "old" Terrebonne bridge.

We returned 30 minutes later, just upstream of the bridge facing the Terrebonne city hall. Very active, he flew several times moving on to different rocks in the middle of the river .... until it disappears away to the east.

- Claude Gagnon

Bird Protection Quebec "Field trip Report"

2013 Summer Series of Birding - Trip #2

Thanks to Mark Dennis for suggesting that we visit a spot that he frequently visits, the Ruisseau a Charette de Baie Brazeau in Pointe-Fortune, Quebec, close to the Ontario border. 17 people came out for the trip today with almost everyone visiting this site for the first time. It's a spot that doesn't appear to get a lot of attention but, after visiting it today, I'm quite sure that many of us will be returning at other times of the year. It consists of a long wooded, but easily walkable trail that eventually opens up into a very large marshy area, with an observation tower and a couple of constructed observation point/rest areas along the path.

In addition to this site, we also made stops at the Carillon Dam in Pointe-Fortune and then traveled along Grand-Montee Road heading south, along the Quebec/Ontario border with a final stop on ch. de la Fourche, west of Rigaud.

Sightings for Friday July 12

Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague: This morning there was a male Eurasian wigeon in breeding plumage, on the Beauharnois canal, about 1.5 km upstream of the Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague bridge. The site is accessible on foot via the Hydro-Quebec road, which runs along the the pond at Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague. The bird was accompanying American wigeons, Gadwall and Mallards.

At Saint-Timothée marsh, I was able to locate a juvenile Least Bittern with a beautiful tuft of down on the head. Also, a female Redhead with five chicks.

- Pierre Bannon

Sightings for Thursday July 11

Hello, I'm at Îles-de-la-Madeleine since June 26 and working for the atlas when I can. Until this morning, I only had only the "normal" species to the islands. This morning, in the corner of lac Solitaire on île de Havre-Aubert, there was a juvenile Boreal Owl who was perched on a dead branch. I took many photos since the model seemed to be enjoying it, or be indifferent. Last week I saw (briefly, as always) a Northern goshawk I heard it a few minutes later. Beyond that, a visit to île d'Entrée allowed me to observe thousands of Black-legged Kittiwakes on the cliffs, with young at various stages (many photos).

Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip"

2013 Summer Series of Birding - Trip #4 - Saturday, July 13

This week's destination will be a new location for us. Based on a suggestion from Mark Dennis, we will be heading to Ruisseau a Charette de Baie Brazeau, in Pointe Fortune, Quebec, just off the Trans-Canada Highway 40 at the Quebec/Ontario border. This is a spot that Mark visits on a regular basis and has made some very interesting finds here. To facilitate things, we will meet at the Hudson Inn, Exit 17 off Highway 40 and drive to the site in convoy from there. So here are the details.

DATE: Saturday, July 13, 2013
TIME: 8:00 AM – Half day; combination driving/walking trip
MEETING PLACE: Departing from the Hudson Inn parking lot in Hudson, located at Exit 17 off of Highway 40. Please arrive early to be ready to depart at 8 AM sharp. Carpooling from the Hudson Inn to the destination and back may be a possibility for some.

NOTE: For anyone who wishes to go directly to the site and meet us there, enter 275 Montee Interprovinciale, Pointe-Fortune, QC into Google Maps or into your GPS to find the entrance to the site.
Also note that there are no facilities on-site.

Mark describes the site: It is a linear walk through woodland to an open area of wetland, about 1.3km each way. You pass through open areas with meadows (Bobolinks) and at the marsh/lagoon there is a rest area and a watch tower. The marsh has Least Bitterns, rails etc. There is parking for about 15 cars. There is a gate with a sign at the entrance to Baie Brazeau. Drive in and park either side of the old railway building. The trail is obvious from here.

There are a few other good birding spots close-by that we may also be able to visit that could offer up Upland Sandpipers, Bobolinks, Eastern Meadowlarks etc., time permitting.

The forecast is for hot, sunny weather on Saturday. Lots of water, sunscreen, insect repellent, etc. are all good suggestions. If you have any questions, please contact me directly (e-mail or phone 450-462-1459). On the morning of the trip, you can reach me on the BPQ phone at 514-637-2141.
