Sightings for Saturday September 14

Montréal, Parc régional de l'Île-de-la-Visitation Map )

We had a record morning, for the number of bird species observed at l’île de la Visitation, Nature Park. For years this nature park, even if there isn’t a rare or threaten species nesting here, is a very important place for them during migration. It is a place where they may feed & rest before continuing their journey south. There are more and more birds visiting this park since its creation 25 years ago. One of my theories for this increase in number is that the park is more mature with a greater variety of trees and shrubs, which many migratory passerines love. Also there are less green species in Laval & even on the island of Montreal in the last 25 years. You tell me, would you rather spend the day at l’île de Visitation or any of the beautiful nature parks on the island of Montreal or a Wal-Mart parking lot. Also there are more & more birders in the park, which means I don’t have to work so hard to find them.

Well here is a short summary of this morning. The new fall record to is 64 species of birds. The previous record was 62 species (28 August 2006). We also set a record for the number of warbler species observed during the fall with 18 (previous record was 17 on August 30, 2006).

I would like to say a big thank you to Alexander Martin & and the Ahuntsic club members, who had a trip in the park this morning , and shared their six bird species that I had not observed this morning , which allowedus to attend this new record .
