Bird Protection Quebec "Field trip Report" Saturday September 14

Pointe de Yamachiche

2 birders were brave enough to hit the road this morning to join the field trip at Yamachiche despite the weather.

One lesson learned for me (one more time I should say): never trust the weather forecast, even 2 hours prior to a trip. What was supposed to be a sunny day 2 days ago, a cloudy day last evening and a gray day with a few showers at 5:00 this morning, turned out to be a rather heavy rainy morning at Yamachiche at least until 10:15 when we got back to the cars, wet and rather cold, just before heading towards a well deserved hot coffee to compile the list.

The very humid weather and quite dense vegetation made it a special atmosphere: while birding the trail to the tip, we were feeling much more like in the rain Forest of Costa Rica or Borneo than in late summer Québec.

Despite challenging conditions, birding was good. And we did not have any problems with bugs! We encountered several flocks of warblers and if we were only able to identify at most 20% of them given the rain, fog on the binoculars, and poor light conditions, we still enjoyed 15 species of warblers, 4 species of vireo and 7 species of sparrow.

At the tip, shorebirds were not numerous but diverse and as water level is high, they were close and we enjoyed good views. A hudsonian godwit was a definite treat, as was a sanderling, and a nice flock of rusty blackbirds that landed on the beach. Full list of 61 species seen in a bit more than 2 hours is below.

Thanks a lot for what turned out to be a very enjoyable morning birding despite challenging weather!
