St-Paul Ile aux Noix: Marbled Godwit (Barge marbrée) - click photo to enlarge - While scanning some partially flooded fields from 100th avenue in SPIN, Darlene spotted a large shorebird, with a very long orange and black bill. We pinned it quickly as a Godwit, but Hudsonian or Marbled was to be determined. After getting several photos and consulting our guides, we went with the Marbled. Last evening I consulted Pierre Bannon and confirmed that it was, indeed,a Marbled Godwit! Certainly a first for Birdathons for us, and only our second sighting of the species ever. The bird flew off, but we ran into him a second time in St-Blaise in partially flooded fields at 53rd Avenue and 3rd street. Bald Eagle (Pygargues à tête blanche) - from the parking lot at the Marina Gosselin on the Richelieu River we were able to observe an adult male Bald Eagle perched in a large tree across the Richelieu River.
St-Blaise: Black-bellied Plover (Pluvier Argenté)- in the same field north of 53rd Avenue on 3rd street, we had a spectacular view of an adult male in full breeding plumage.Wilson's Phalarope (Phalaropes de Wilson) - a male and female pair of birds were spotted on the sand along the shoreline on 1st street, west of 53rd Avenue. There were a lot of birds in the St-Blaise fields including Northern Shovelers (Canard souchet), Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs (Grand Chevalier et Petit Chevalier) and and many Least and Spotted Sandpipers (Bécasseau minuscule et Chevalier grivelé). These fields however are drying out very quickly. We were in this region about two weeks ago and the fields looked more like part of the Richelieu River with several of the road completely under water. Yesterday, only some of the fields had standing water ponds left in them, but they certainly did produce results, even though the wide variety of ducks found there a few weeks back had moved on. – D & S Harvey
