Bird Protection Quebec's Field Trip Report for Saturday March 21st
Cap St Jacques Field Trip
Clear, calm weather greeted 13 birders at Cap St Jacques yesterday with temperautures climbimg from -9C to near the freezing point by the end of the outing.
The nice weather did not bring with it the expected number of birds. Perhaps the colder temperatures of the previous few days had put a slight "damper' on migration.
In any case, the group had a pleasant walk with good company and we managed to pick up 30 species including those seen along the route to the park. Birds of the day were a small group of common goldeneye performing courtship displays inbright sunlight. A close second would be the pair of pileated woodpeckers whose sighting became a "teachable" moment as we compared the extent of the red patterns on the male and female heads.

Baie-du-Febvre: 12,000 Snow geese in the fields west of route Janelle. 1,500 Canada geese, 1 Cackling goose, 25 Black ducks & 20 Northern pintails. Other migrators – 18 Rough-legged hawks, 1 Red-Shouldered hawk numerous Horned larks, Snow buntings, Lapland longspur, Cowbirds, Common grackles and more than 1000 Red-winged blackbirds
Oies des neiges J'ai estimé à 12,000 individus présents dans les champs à l'ouest de la route Janelle. Les autres anatidés présents étaient ~1500 Bernaches du Canada, une Bernache de Hutchins (à la halte "la Bernache"), 25 Canards noirs et 20 Canards pilets. A very active morning for Great Horned owls (Grand-duc d'Amérique) in the Arbo just as spring was officially arriving. There were at least three, two of which were being pursued by Crows (Corneille d'Amérique) (I originally spotted them in the spruce plantation off the orange trail) -- I think these two were a pair--and another hooting in the hemlocks off the yellow trail. Quite a few Brown Creepers (Grimpereau brun) singing--they have been for the past week or so. A fun morning - Betsy
Bedford, water treatment ponds: 5 Greater white-fronted geese, 250 Canada geese, 20 Ring-billed gulls, 30 Mallards

en compagnie de quelques observateurs, nous avons pu voir (essentiellement entre 12h00 et 13h30): 6 Aigles royaux adultes, 3 Pygargues à tête blanche adultes, 1 Buse à épaulettes, 6 Buses à queue rousse, 3 Buses pattues, 1 Busard St-Martin, 2 Éperviers de Cooper (locaux)

Sightings for Sunday March 15th
Chateauguay Ile St-Bernard: There were about 6 Tufted Titmouse (Mésange bicolore), 10 White-breasted Nuthatches, (Sittelle à poitrine blanche) and many Black-capped chickadees (Mésange à tête noire) to nobody's surprise. As we were watching them around the feeder, a Merlin (Faucon émerillon) flew out of the woods and over ustoward the marsh. Red-winged Blackbirds (Carouge à épaulettes) were the dominant specie, with about 50 around the marsh, and maybe double that around the whole island. But, the main event of the day was when I was walking back toward the feeder, a Northern Shrike (Pie-grièche grise) flew out of the reeds at the edge of the frozen marsh and up into a tree. It then began to chase one of the Blackbirds around the trees. It never did catch it, but it came mighty close. You had to see that Blackbird whizzing in and out of the trees. I was impressed by its acrobatical flying abilities. The Shrike eventually gave up. I did see it again later near the path along the river a bit south of the chalet, but that was after seeing a Red-tailed Hawk (Buse à queue rousse) soaring above the trees at the back of the marsh - Hal - click photo to enlarge

près de la voie ferrée où j'ai rencontré Pierre Éthier, Charles Ménard et Luc Goneau. Par une journée radieuse, nous avons dénombré 6 (probablement 7) Aigles royaux, tous des adultes, un Autour des palombes adulte, une Buse pattue et une dizaine de Buses à queue rousse. Avant mon arrivée, Pierre avait vu 3 Pluviers kildir et une Pie-grièche grise.
Saint-Timothée: rte 132 a little east of (barrage des) Cèdres dam thousands of Canada geese, many Northern pintails and 2 Greater white-fronted geese
en bordure de la route 132 un peu à l'est du barrage des Cèdres. Il y avait des milliers de Bernaches du Canada, plusieurs Canards pilets à cet endroit, ainsi que 2 Oies rieuses (bec orange) - Pierre Bannon

One splendid white phase Gyrfalcon (Faucon gerfaut) came to roost at Dieppe cliff in Mt St Hilaire today. We saw it fly around the cliff twice, after which it disappeared into a narrow crack on the most extensive, bare/ exposed rock face at about 7:00pm (shortly after sundown) - Toby Nowlan and Virginia Elliot
St-Clet: Northern Hawk Owl (Chouette épervière) just off highway 201, north of St-Clet along Chemin Fief. It now seems to have moved to 2432 Chemin Fief on the right hand side of the stone and green bungalow - Gillian

Sightings for Saturday March 7th
Signs of spring were abundant along the Richelieu River today, with warm temperatures, sunshine and little wind. Accompanied by Mary Ellen Graham, I decided to follow the western shore of the Richelieu, starting in St. Jean sur Richelieu, heading south through St-Blaise, St-Paul de l'Ile aux Noix, Notre-Dame de Mont Carmel, Lacolle, Cantic and Odelltown.
There were many highlights throughout the day including 3 Tufted Titmouse (Mésange bicolore) on Fernet Street in St-Jean; many groups of Common Mergansers (Grand harle) and Common Goldeneye (Garrot à oeil d'or), both very active at various points along the river, with many doing their nifty little courting dances; our first Red-winged Blackbirds (Carouge à épaulettes) of the season on 73rd avenue in St. Paul, and a Red-tailed Hawk (Buse à queue rousse) in Lacolle.
Without a doubt though, the major event of the day started to unfold at about 1 PM on ch. de la Barbotte, just north of the U.S. border. We began hearing geese overhead and soon saw large numbers of Snow Geese crossing the Richelieu from the Lacolle side to the eastern shore in Noyan. We headed quickly across the river, to ch. du Bord-de-l'eau. About half-way between Highway 202 and the U.S. border we came upon a huge flock of Snow Geese (Oies des neiges) sitting in, and circling around corn fields, with more and more joining them by the minute. To add to the excitement, a young Peregrine Falcon (Faucon pèlerin) sat perched in a nearby tree surveying the action. He made two separate passes through the flock, causing quite a disturbance!
We continued down to the U.S. border and saw a huge raft of Snow Geese (Oies des neiges) sitting out on the river, back towards the western shore. We estimated a total of at least 10,000 Snow Geese (Oies des neiges), a spectacular site, particularly for March 7th.

No owls....hardly any at all , this winter.... very little activity in the woods, aside from the feeders.

Sightings for Friday march 6th
Something (wolf/coyote/dog?) killed a deer two days ago on our bay at Lac Bernard, situated in municipalities of La Pêche and Low, in the Outaouais. The first afternoon, there were 3 Bald eagles (Pygarques à tête blanche) Eagles feeding on the carrion. Yesterday and today I've seen one. Mascouche, Chemin de la cabane ronde: 2 Great gray owls one in front of the abandonned house with the stone chimney. The 2nd was behind the house a little passed a mound of sand

Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Morgan arboretum: Anyone heading to the Arboretum this weekend might be interested to know that the Barred Owl (Chouette rayée) has stuck his head up again today ... if you download the grid map from http://www.morganarboretum.org/Downloads/gridmap0001.pdf the recent sightings have been in squares M4, IorJ9 and today in E14. The owl seems to be very cooperative during the day and happily sits out in the open where you can see him - Fred Parkinson who saw him today says that the bird actually moved gradually towards them while they stood still so he is extremely cooperative and seemed as interested in them as they were in him.

Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Morgan arboretum: We were fortunate today to see - and what's more photograph - a pair of Ruffed grouse (Gélinotte huppée) in the Arboretum. The male was seriously strutting his stuff.I have a couple of photographs on my birding blog at http://sparroworks.wordpress.com/ that you may find interesting.
