Sightings for Tuesday November 16th
(l'étang de) Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague pond Snow geese: This morning when I arrived around 8:00 the pond was almost deserted. a thousand Scaup, a few Coots, Ruddy ducks and Hooded mergansers. Then they began to arrive from the southeast. Two large waves of about 15,000 geese each. Then continuously, smaller groups of 50 to 1000 birds. So that when it was time to leave at around 1 p.m. there were about 60,000. The geese usually frequent this pond until it freezes.
Oies des neiges à l'étang de Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague: Ce matin à mon arrivée vers 8h00 l'étang était pratiquement désert. Tout au plus un millier de fuligules divers, quelques foulques, érismatures et harles couronné. Puis elles se sont mises à arriver en provenance du sud-est. Deux grosses vagues successives d'environ 15000 oies chacune. Puis de façon continue des groupes moins importants de 50 à 1000 oiseaux. Si bien qu'au moment de mon départ vers 13h00 j'estime qu'elles étaient environ 60000. Les oies fréquentent habituellement cet étang jusqu'à ce qu'il gèle. - Alain Hogue

Sighitngs for Monday November 15th
Longueil: This afternoon at around 4:00pm I saw the Yellow-throated Warbler (Paruline a gorge jaune) in Parc Marie-Victorin. It was actively foraging (caught a nice-sized spider while we were watching) just along the ridge between the river and the Highway 20 with about a dozen Chickadees (Mésanges). Also, just looking out from that same area along the river I saw 14+ Black Scoter (Marcreuse noire), 4 White-winged Scoter (Marcreuses brun), 1 Surf Scoter (Marcreuse à front blanc), 3 American Wigeon, 4 Red-breasted Mergansers and some Common oldeneye.- Alex Stone

Brébeuf: Today at about 10:30, we observed and photographed a Cattle egret among catle at Brébeuf. It was just before the Picardier organic farm on Route 323 - It has been observed in agricultural fields behind a casse-croûte at the intersection of Highway 323 and chemin Tour du Carré behind a farm located 1.5 km in the direction of Brebeuf. Picardier The farm is halfway between these two places.

Montréal, rue Marc-Cantin : Northern mockingbird in the Technopark area where I counted 10 in July (3 couples and juveniles). The bird was along the fence of the Via-Rail yard. Also in this area in a Red-tailed hawk and an American kestrel.

Bird Protection Quebec's Field Trip Report
The only downside to yesterday's outing to Reservoir Beaudet in Victoriaville and les Etangs Burbank in Danville was the inaccurate weather forecast for the day. The forecast called for mainly sunny with a few cloudy periods. The weather people seemed to have things reversed with predominantly cloudy skies with the very occasional sunny period. That however did not put a dent in the birding experience.
23 people turned out for the day that got underway a little before noon at Victoriaville. As we approached the outskirts of Victoriaville the sky was filled with the arrival of thousands and thousands of Snow Geese descending towards the surface of the water at the reservoir. The parking lot was filled with locals and visitors spending the late morning and early afternoon experiencing the semi-annual event.
Snow Geese far outnumbered any other species on the reservoir as they covered probably two-thirds of the complete water surface. Several duck species and gulls could be seen but generally far across the water opposite our observation point.
However, our first "celebrity" bird of the day appeared a mere 50 feet or so in front of us. A lone Cackling Goose easily stood out amongst the Snow Geese providing all of us with excellent opportunities to take in what was a lifer for the majority of us. Later in the day, at least two others were spotted at Victoriaville, and quite possibly another two at Danville, although they were extremely distant from our observation point.
Les Etangs Burbank in Danville certainly did not disappoint either. We spent from mid-afternoon until well after sunset taking in the additional thousands and thousands of Snow Geese. This location also provided a few other highlights. First off, a lone American Coot swam and dove just a few feet off the end of one of the numerous observation decks around the site. Good sized groups of Hooded and Common Mergansers filled some of the open water spots not fully occupied by Snow Geese.
Towards the end of the afternoon, from the observation tower, Nick Acheson has spotted a Ross's Goose, but as our group was spread out throughout the site the majority of the people did not get a chance to see this bird. But as we gathered at the end of the afternoon at the main belevedere in the park to watch the sunset arrival of additional Snow Geese, persistent scanning of the thousands of geese paid off as one of our group from McGill spotted a sole Ross's Goose swimming slightly away from the masses, in close proximity to us, providing excellent views with binoculars and scopes, as well as a great photoopportunity. The majority of our group had landed their second lifer of the day!
Our species count for the day just about matched our birder count, but the quantity of birds was overwhelming. Here is our species list of 24, with very much estimated numbers on many of the species.

The trip ended with a spectacular view of what the locals at Danville call the Ghost Geese. Across the ponds towards the town of Asbestos, a long line of illumanated greenhouses provide an interesting backdrop from the observation deck. After sunset, a patch of the sky is illuminated by these lights. As arriving Snow Geese pass through this patch, their white bodies are lit up like ghostly images drifting across the sky. This certainly put an exciting and rewarding end to a great day of birding.

It was a Lesser black-backed Gull seen well with the scope by many observers. Also American coots
Nous avons également bien pu trouver le Pélican d'Amérique au lac Boivin, tout près de la rive le long des sentiers principaux, vers 11h30 ce matin. Toutefois, en plus mais un peu avant, un goéland de type marin était sur l'eau mais à côté d'un Goéland argenté qui était un peu plus gros. Boucherville: There are 4 to 6 Long-eared Owls (Moyen-Duc) on ile Charron today. It is at the back of the parking lot, next to green and orange slides in playground. They are roosting in the clump of cedar trees next to the playground. Look for the white-wash - Wilson Hum

Québec: Given that this bird was seen yesterday near a fence bordering commercial and institutional land, let me pass along the information without taking the credit for this discovery.
From this person I learned of an immature LARK SPARROW, it was behind 77 rue Plante (northern extension of rue Marie de l’Incarnation) in Quebec. The bird was accompanying a Dark-eyed Junco and stood along the metal fence at the beginng of Videotron's property going south. He seemed to move several tens of meters (if not hundreds) but remained in this section using the fence as a perch from time to time. It is relatively surprising to see at this place as there are no feeder nearby. Good luck to those interested.

C’est par personne interposée que j’ai appris qu’un Bruant à joue marron, immature, se trouvait derrière le 77 rue Plante (prolongement nord de la rue Marie de l’Incarnation) à Québec. L’oiseau accompagnait un Junco ardoisé et se tenait le long de la clôture métallique à partir du terrain du Vidéotron en allant vers le sud. Il semblait se déplacer de plusieurs dizaines de mètres (pour ne pas dire centaines) mais demeurait dans cette section et se servant de la clôture comme perchoir de temps à autre. C’est relativement surprenant de le voir à cet endroit, il n’y a aucune mangeoire à proximité. Bonne chance aux intéressés. - Gérard Cyr

Dundee: I had the chance to observe and photograph 6 Sandhill cranes. They were in a field on the right side of Highway 132 looking toward the marsh. This field is located just before the entrance to the "digue aux aigrettes" trail of the réserve nationale de faune du Lac St-François.
J'ai eu la chance d'observer et de photographier 6 grues du Canada. Elles se trouvaient dans un champs du côté droit de la route 132 en regardant vers le marais. Ce champs est situé un peu avant l'entrée de la digue aux aigrettes de la réserve nationale de faune du Lac St-François. - Lucien Lemay

12:00 Noon Meet at the parking lot of Beaudet Reservoir in Victoriaville, (NOTE: From Sherbrooke & Decarie in Montreal, Google Maps calculates 2 hours (170 km. to Victoriaville)
From all points head to Autoroute 20 East (Direction-Quebec City). Travel on Autoroute 20 to Exit 210 to Autoroute 955. Follow Autoroute 955 (direction Saint-Albert/Victoriaville/Warwick) for 15 km. and turn LEFT on Route 122. Travel 11 km on Route 122 to Grande-Ligne. Turn left on Grande-Ligne. In 350m, turn right on to Garand. There is a parking lot on the right just in front of the reservoir. GPS or Google Map Coordinates: +46° 4'7.60", -71°58'38.60"
We will view the reservoir from a causeway crossing it, looking for waterfowl, etc.
From Reservoir Beaudet in Victoriaville, we will drive approximately 40 km. to Étang Burbank, in Danville, NOTE: A map of the route from Victoriaville to Danville will be provided to everyone at Victoriaville.
We will arrive around mid-afternoon and explore the trails and boardwalks around the pond. Just before dusk, we will return to the observation tower to wait for the arrival of the ducks and geese (Snow & Canada) as they return to the pond, hopefully in the thousands, to spend the night. Half day.

Nous arriverons en milieu d'après midi et explorerons les chemins et passerelles qui longent l'étang. A la brunante, nous retournerons à la tour d'observation pour l'arrivée des canards et des oies (bernaches et oies des neiges) lors de leur retour à l'étang pour y passer la nuit. Chateauguay, rue Higgins: 2 Tufted titmouse (Mésange bicolore), Red-bellied woodpecker (Pic à ventre roux) - Jeff Harrison

Montréal, l'île Sainte-Hélène (7:30 - 10:00). Near the small bridge, just east of the Calder statue, I was surprised to see a beautiful Northern parula, which fed actively in low vegetation and shrubs. I watched for awhile and she seemed to find ample food. In the same area, A Winter wren that has been there for several weeks. Near the Calder statue, this time it is a Yellow-rumped warbler. In the same area, Hermit Thrush, Fox Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, numerous White-throated Sparrows. many Golden-crowned Kinglets, etc.. Further east, walking toward the tower, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet among the many American robins, etc.. Near the subway station, I observed a Hermit Thrush while she sang a few phrases. It was a little weird to hear at this time of year. Daniel Ouellette told me very clearly heard the cries of a White-winged crossbill which flew over 'île Sainte-Hélène this morning.
Près du petit pont, un peu à l'est de la statue Calder, j'ai eu la surprise de voir une belle Paruline à collier, qui se nourrissait activement dans la basse végétation des arbustes. J'ai pu l'observer un bon moment: elle semblait trouver amplement de nourriture. Dans le même secteur, un Troglodyte des forêts qui traîne là depuis quelques semaines. Près de la Statue Calder, cette fois c'est une Paruline à croupion jaune. Dans le même secteur, Grive solitaire, Bruant fauve, Bruant hudsonien, Nombreux Bruants à gorge blanche, Plusieurs Roitelets à couronne dorée, etc. Plus à l'est, en marchant vers la tour, un Roitelet à couronne rubis parmi de nombreux Merles d'Amérique, etc. Près de la station de métro, j'ai observé une Grive solitaire pendant qu'elle chantait quelques phrases. Ça m'a fait un peu bizarre de l'entendre à ce temps-ci de l'année. Daniel Ouellette m'a dit avoir entendu très nettement les cris d'un Bec-croisé bifascié qui est passé en vol à l'île Sainte-Hélène ce matin. - Diane Demers

Sightings for Saturday November 6th
Danville, Étang Burbank: This morning at 7:15, about 45,000 Snow geese took flight for neighboring fields. Several other species were found also on the pond. Mallard, Canvasback, Ring-necked duck, Hooded Merganser, Common Mergansers, Canada Geese, Black Scoters (At least a hundred) Surf Scoters, etc.. As there will be beautiful weather for several days to come, observers should be blessed, because we expect to see the geese come back to spend some time on the pond between 11.00 a.m. and 15.00 p.m. The other moments to admire the Geese are still early in the morning, and at dusk when they return to spend the night.
Ce matin à 7.15 hres, environ 45 000 Oies des neiges prenaient leur envol pour les champs avoisinants. Plusieurs autres espèces se retrouvaient également sur l'étang. Canards colvert, Fuligules à collier, Harles couronnés, Grands Harles, Bernaches du Canada, Macreuses noires (au moins une centaine) Macreuses à front blanc, etc. Comme on nous annonce de la belle température pour plusieurs jours à venir, les observateurs devraient être choyés car on s'attend à voir les oies revenir passer quelque temps sur l'étang entre 11.00 hres et 15.00 hres. Saint-Louis de Gonzague: Between 8:00 and 10:00 we were at the (l'étang de) St-Louis pond. An observation of interest was the Peregrine falcon that was faithful to his post on the bridge. A disappointing number of only 5.000 Snow Geese. Some 3.500 Scaup, Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked Duck. 20 American Coot, a dozen Red-breasted Merganser, and 2 Ruddy Duck. When I came back around 12:15, the number of snow geese was significantly increased and fluctuated between 30,000 and 40,000 birds.

Saint-Louis de Gonzague: Entre 8h00 et 10h00 nous étions à l'étang de St-Louis. Parmi les observations d'intérêt le Faucon pèlerin qui était fidèle à son poste sur le pont. Un nombre décevant d'à peine 5,000 Oie des neiges. Quelques 3,500 Fuligule milouinan, Petit fuligule et Fuligule à collier. Une vingtaine de Foulque d'Amérique, une dizaine de Harle huppé et deux Érismature rousse. Lorsque je suis repassé vers 12h15, le nombre d'oie des neiges avait significativement augmenté et oscillait entre 30,000 et 40,000 oiseaux.

canal de Beauharnois canal: The three species of Scoters (Black, Surf and White-winged) were on the Beauharnois Canal. There were also five Red-necked grebes. Many ducks, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Greater Scaup, Mallard, Common Merganser, Hooded merganser, Canada goose and Snow goose (in flight)
Les trois espèces de macreuses (noir, à front blanc et brun) étaient au canal de Beauharnois. Il y avait aussi cinq grèbes jougris. Victoriaville, réservoir Beaudet: Where I witnessed the spectacle of Snow geese until the very last bit of ligh at the end of day at 18:20. Incredible! I always underestimat widely the numbers when it comes time to evaluate large Gatherings of birds, but my wife Brigitte, more gifted than me at this, is 100% convinced that the number of geese Snow on the reservoir exceeded 100 000 (hundred thousand) at our departure. There were already tens of thousands geese on the reservoir at our arrival, and new geese ever came by the thousands until dark around 5 p.m.
Also a Cackling Goose! I recommend this site to anyone who is looking for a rare goose (goose Ross, white-fronted goose, barnacle goose, goose-footed, etc..) Tomorrow chances are there. And for everyone in fact, it's really a breathtaking spectacle.
Réservoir Beaudet, où j'ai assisté au spectacle des Oies des neiges jusqu'au tout dernier semblant de lueur du jour à 18:20. Incroyable! Je sous-estime toujours largement les nombres quand vient le temps d'évaluer de grands rassemblements d'oiseaux, mais ma conjointe Brigitte, plus douée que moi à ce niveau-là, est 100% convaincue que le nombre d'oies des neiges sur le réservoir DÉPASSAIT les 100 000 (cent mille) à notre départ. Il y avait déjà des dizaines de milliers d'oies sur le réservoir à notre arrivée, et de nouvelles oies arrivaient sans cesse par milliers d'environ 17h jusqu'à l'obscurité totale!!
Aussi une Bernache de Hutchins! Je recommande tout de même ce site à quiconque sera à la recherche d'une oie rare (oie de Ross, oie rieuse, bernache nonnette, oie à bec court, etc.) demain, les chances sont là. Et à tout le monde en fait, c'est vraiment un spectacle saisissant. - Stéphane Guimond

Ce matin à 7.15 hres, environ 45 000 Oies des neiges prenaient leur envol pour les champs avoisinants. Plusieurs autres espèces se retrouvaient également sur l'étang. Canards colvert, Fuligules à collier, Harles couronnés, Grands Harles, Bernaches du Canada, Macreuses noires (au moins une centaine) Macreuses à front blanc, etc. Comme on nous annonce de la belle température pour plusieurs jours à venir, les observateurs devraient être choyés car on s'attend à voir les oies revenir passer quelque temps sur l'étang entre 11.00 hres et 15.00 hres. Philipsburg this afternoon on the east side of Missisquoi Bay, among a mixed group of about 1500 Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked Ducks and a few Common Goldeneye, a male Harlequin duck first winter. Observation made in the company of Simon Lavoie in front of the cabins "Aux deux mousses".
Philipsburg cet après-midi, du côté est de la baie Mississquoi, parmi un groupe mixte d'environ 1500 Petits Fuligules et Fuligules à collier et quelques Garrots à oeil d'or, un Arlequin plongeur mâle de premier hiver. Montréal, Île Ste-Hélène: The most interesting observation was a Northern goshawk eating a Ring-billed gull. Also present was a Bohemian waxwing wiith a flock of Starlings.

He was feeding when we arrived around 2:00 p.m. at the rear of 297 Héron garde-boeuf était toujours présent vers 15:09 en face du 290 de la route 255 cet après-midi. Il se nourrissait quand nous sommes arrivés vers 14:00 à l'arrière du 297. - Danielle et Roger Roy
