Sightings for Sunday May 19

Montréal: I visited the eastern part of Mount Royal Park this morning (7-11am) with Michael Elliott and Prayitno Goenarto. Most of the migrants that were seen during the week seem to have moved on. 2 pairs of Indigo Buntings were seen near the belvedere- the males were singing incessantly, seemingly oblivious to the loud tourists above them.The Blue-gray Gnatcatcher was still present in this area, but there was no sign of the Yellow-throated Vireo.Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Swainson's Thrush were all seen very well today. 51 species were observed in total.

12 warbler species were observed - Magnolia and Blackburnian were the most numerous. No Black-throated Blue or Northern Parulas were seen/heard- quite surprising as there were many on Friday. Similarly, only five Yellow-rumped Warblers were seen. Both the Westmount Summit and the Cemetery were pretty good for warblers. Total of 13 species seen. At the Mount Royal Cemetery, Gray Catbirds were singing but no Brown Thrashers yet. A pair of American Redstarts looked as if they were interested in staying around for a while. Yellow-rumped Warblers were in a large group and seemed to prefer trees with fewer leaves. Had a good look at a male Wilson's Warbler close to the ground in a bush. A Northern Harrier flew over Mount Royal at a leisurely pace, headed north.

This morning on my return walk at Ile St-Bernard, I came across an Orchard oriole (male first summer with its greenish color and black-throat) in the first wooded area to the right from the entrance . The bird is then moved into the orchard. When I left, he was still singing in the area of ​​orchard.

In addition, I listed six species of warblers which are always appreciated. Canada Warblers, Bay-breasted and Blackburnian. The Yellow warbler dominates in number followed by the American redstart and Yellow rumped warblers. Next were Blackpoll warblers, Common yellowthroat and Tennessee. The Swainson's Thrushes were also present in large numbers. 66 species were recorded on the sheet for this pleasant morning.


Ce matin au retour de ma promenade sur l'Ile St-Bernard, j'ai pu croiser un Oriole des vergers (mâle de 1er été avec sa couleur verdâtre et sa gorge noire) dans le premier boisé à droite à partir de l'entrée. L'oiseau s'est déplacé ensuite dans...le verger. Au moment où je quittais, il chantait toujours dans le secteur du verger.

De plus, j'ai répertorié seize espèces de parulines dont les toujours appréciées Parulines du Canada, à poitrine baie et à gorge orangée. La Paruline jaune domine largement en nombre suivie de la flamboyante et de la croupion jaune. Viennent ensuite les Parulines rayée, masquée, à tête cendrée et obscure. Les Grives à dos olive étaient présentes en grand nombre également. 66 espèces ont été inscrites sur le feuillet pour cette agréable matinée. - Daniel Ouellette

Hudson Evening Field Trip, May 16

The evening started out bright and sunny with excellent looks at a Green heron that was fishing from a submerged tree in Aird's Pond. The north west winds got stronger however, and our group of eight birders found the weather to be quite chilly by the end of the evening.

Montréal: Mount Royal Park (eastern slope between Avenue du Parc and the belvedere on Camillien-Houde) this morning from 8am to 12:30pm. It was another excellent day for warblers, with 19 species seen. However, the best birds were a Yellow-throated Vireo and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher that gave superb views as they foraged at eye-level in the same tree! Indigo Buntings have arrived on Mount Royal, with 2 pairs seen just below the belvedere. An Olive-sided Flycatcher was present in the trees behind the fire service building on Av. du Parc. 71 species were observed in total.

"Jim Houghton Warbler Walk" May 14

Eight birders participated in this morning's Jim Houghton Warbler Walk (7 to 9 am) at the Westmount Summit. I stayed until 10:30 with Mary-Ellen and we managed to add a few more species to the list. It turned out to be an excellent day for warblers with 16 species seen/heard and 51 species observed overall. 

The most interesting observations were a singing Orange-crowned Warbler that was seen near the lookout (between 6:45 and 7:10 am) and a Gray-cheeked Thrush that was seen in the bushes along the closed road (around 10:00 am).

7:30 a.m. Meet at the welcome centre of the Refuge on Île St-Bernard, Châteauguay. From Montreal, take Hwy 138 and cross the Mercier Bridge. Stay right coming off the bridge and take Hwy 138 through Kahnawake into Châteauguay. As you enter Châteauguay, turn right onto St-Francis Blvd. Follow StFrancis all the way to the end where it meets the Châteauguay River at Salaberry Blvd North. Turn right onto Salaberry North. Continue past the railway bridge. The next bridge that crosses the road and river is Pont de la Sauvagine. Turn right just after the bridge. There is a sign and an entrance ramp for the bridge for Beauharnois and the Refuge. Cross the bridge and continue to Notre-Dame Nord. At the flashing red light, turn right onto Notre-Dame and follow the signs to the Refuge. Cross the small bridge onto Île StBernard. The parking area is to the right. Walking trip: Looking for waterbirds, summer breeding birds and late migrants. The grass paths are usually wet early in the morning so wear appropriate footwear. $3.00 admission. Half day.

7h30 Rassemblement à l’accueil du refuge, île Saint-Bernard, Châteauguay. De Montréal, prendre la route 138 et traverser le pont Mercier. A la sortie du pont, garder la droite et continuer sur la 138, passé Kahnawake, jusqu’à Châteauguay. A l’entrée de Châteauguay, tourner à droite sur le boul. St-Francis. Continuer sur celui-ci jusqu’à l’intersection avec le boul. Salaberry Nord, qui longe la rivière Châteauguay. Tourner à droite sur Salaberry nord, passer en-dessous du pont de la voie ferrée et continuer jusqu’à un deuxième pont : il s’agit du pont de la Sauvagine. Tourner à droite juste après avoir passé sous ce pont et accéder à une rampe d’accès au pont. Des indications pour le refuge y sont visibles. Traverser le pont et continuer jusqu’à la rue Notre-Dame Nord. Au feu rouge clignotant, tourner à droite sur Notre-Dame et suivre les indications pour le refuge. Traverser le petit pont qui mène à l’île Saint-Bernard. Le stationnement est à la droite. Excursion à pied, à la recherche d’oiseaux aquatiques, d’oiseaux nicheurs et de migrateurs tardifs. Considérant que les sentiers gazonnés sont généralement humides le matin, il est conseillé de porter des chaussures adéquates. 3.00$. Demi-journée.

Montréal:  Mount Royal Park this morning from 7-10 am. The overcast conditions/light rain coupled with the strong south-west winds overnight have brought in a large number of migrating passerines. I concentrated solely on the eastern slope of Mt Royal, between Avenue du Parc and the belvedere on Camillien-Houde.

The highlight for today's trip was a very large flock of warblers (130+) that moved swiftly through the trees just below the belvedere. The rain/wind forced the birds to feed a bit lower in the trees than they usually do. I was able to follow the flock for about an hour and managed to see/hear at least 20 species of warblers. Thrushes, vireos and flycatchers were also present in good numbers and were very vocal.

8:30 a.m. Meet at the defunct Motel Frontière. From Montreal take the Champlain Bridge, Highway 10 east to exit 22, Highway 35 south to St. Jean to join Highway 133 south to Philipsburg. Now that the motel has been demolished, the location is not easy to see from the southbound side of the road so continue towards the border crossing. Immediately before the border buildings take the well-marked U- turn on the left to cross over to the northbound side of the road. Look on your right for the large white sign telling drivers to fasten their seat belts - the entrance to the old motel site and the parking area is immediately beyond it. Note that there are two gravelled entrances - do NOT take the first, it is washed out and impassable, the second entry is excellent. Good choice of trails from long and strenuous to short and easy. Bring a lunch. Looking for migrating passerines, waterfowl and hawks. 
 
8 h 30 Rassemblement au défunt Motel Frontière. De Montréal, traverser le pont Champlain et continuer sur l'autoroute 10 est. Prendre la sortie 22 et rejoindre l'autoroute 35 sud. Continuer sur celle-ci jusqu'à Saint-Jean. De là continuer sur l'autoroute 133 sud en direction de Philipsburg. Maintenant que le motel a été démoli le stationnement est difficile de voir du côté sud de la route. Donc, continuer vers le poste frontalier. Juste avant les bâtiments de passage, prendre le bien-marquée demi-tour sur la gauche pour passer sur la direction du nord côté de la route. Chercher le grand panneau blanc indiquant aux conducteurs de boucler leur ceinture de sécurité sur votre droite - l'entrée sur le site vieux motel et le stationnement est immédiatement au-delà. Bonne variété de sentiers dont les niveaux de difficulté vont de longs et ardus à courts et faciles. Apporter un lunch. Espèces recherchées : passereaux en migration, sauvagine et rapaces diurnes.

This morning, I birded Westmounts Parc Summit and the Mount Royal Cemetery for several hours--it was incredibly quiet, literally and figuratively, as the only migrant species I saw or heard were White-throated Sparrow (Bruant à gorge blanche) (6) cemetery and Yellow-rumped Warbler  (Paruline à croupion jaune) (2) at the Summit.

BUT, it still was a great birding day as I had a roosting Long-eared Owl (Hibou moyen-duc) at Parc Summit. I do not get to see many of these, especially in good lighting so a very good personal sighting. The owl was perched high in a tree at the edge of the "middle" crossover trail near where a side trail exits. I did mark an "X" in the dirt trail where I had the sighting in case anyone tries for this bird today. I first saw it ~7:30 a.m. and it was there for at least 40 mins as I checked it on-and-off. I looked for other birders but did not see anyone else birding at that time. - Charlie Nims

Sightings for Sunday May 5

Montréal: Mount Royal Cemetery this morning from 8 am to 1 pm. The birds were very active today. Quite a few species have occupied nests already, while others were observed either carrying nesting material or constructing nests. 

Bird of the day was a Black-billed Cuckoo, which was initially heard singing ("po-po-po-po") in the Mountain View sector. It was then observed briefly in the Mt Murray sector (the slope with bluebird boxes), after which it flew into the woods bordering the University of Montreal campus.

The Eastern Towhee reported yesterday was still present this morning in sector C4 (near the crematorium). Itwas really shy and kept to the thicker bushes. I could not locate the bird later in the afternoon (around 12:30).

Six warbler species were seen today, including Nashville, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, American Redstart, Ovenbird and Common Yellowthroat. 

Both House Wrens and Eastern Bluebirds have occupied nest boxes in sectors M4/M3 and F10 respectively. A pair of Eastern Phoebes are nesting in the bushes behind the office area. 54 species were observed in total.
