Summit Park in Westmount is a wooded area transacted by numerous footpaths. From mid-April to late May, spring migrants find the summit an attractive place in which to rest and feed. At least 33 warbler species have been seen over the years and 24 warbler species are seen each year. Come out and participate in one or all of the Jim Houghton Spring Warbler Walks with an informal group of BPQ members. It’s a perfect start to a spring day.

Bird Protection Quebec's Field Trip Report - Saturday May 7th

Bourcherville: Parc De La Frayère / Ducks Unlimited / Canards Illimités Canada Site


This was a lead field trip for the BPQ. A total of 24 people came, and a total of 64 species of birds were observed. There was also a hawk/sp and possible Waxwing heard not included on the list. A total of 8 species of ducks, as well as 4 species of swallows and sparrows. And no doubt a sign that spring is here, after a week of bad weather, a total of 7 species of warblers. I just wish to thank everyone who came. Thanks and hope to see you next time.

Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Morgan Arboretum: In the arboretum this afternoon we almost stepped on a Pileated Woodpecker (Grand pic) hacking at a rotted log. She was so intent on getting out fat grubs that we were of no concern and thus we were able to make a short video of her activity ... handheld, I fear, but not too wobbly! - Richard Gregson

Hudson: I took an opportunity late Saturday afternoon to stroll around the neighbourhood (Mt Victoria in Hudson). Saw a group of warblers chasing each other through the branches of a tall Norway spruce. I soon remembered how frustrating warbler watching can be under those conditions as none of the birds would settle long enough for a decent view. Just when I was going to give in to "warbler neck" and move onon one of the birds finally sat on an open branch to feed. Expecting a Yellow-rumped I suddenly realized that the "yellow" was in the wrong place and that I was in fact looking at a Yellow-throated Warbler (Paruline à gorge jaune) - a first for me in Quebec. Then had some great views of Blackburnian, Black-throated blue, Nashville, Black and White, and  Yellow-rumped Warblers (Parulines - à gorge orangée, bleu, à joues grises, noir et blanc et à croupion jaune) . Montréal, Botanical Garden: Warblers - 1 Nashville, 1 Yellow, 40 Yellow-rumped, Black-throated green one, a male blackburnian Warbler, 3 Palm , 2 Black and white, 1 Northern waterthrush the edge of one of the ponds. There were also 6 esp. of Sparrows including a Field Sparrow in the Gardens of First Nations, I observed 2 Hermit Thrush, a Wood Thrush, 2 Blue-headed Vireos a pair of Purple finch  feeding on top of a birch ,and a female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker . In the Chinese Garden, a Broad-winged hawk, chastised by a Crow. In a pond, a Great blue heron was fishing and I think that is a catfish that was the at end of it's bill when I saw it. Returning by the Maison de l'Arbre in the boisé des Frênes (ash woods), a Rusty Blackbird - Lucette d'Amours

au Jardin Botanique: Parulines - 1 à joues grises, 1 jaune, 40 à croupion jaune, 1 à gorge noire, 1 mâle à gorge orangée, 3 à couronne rousse, 2 noir et blanc, 1 des ruisseaux sur la bordure d'un des étangs. Il y avait aussi 6 esp. de Bruants dont un Bruant des champs  Dans le Jardins des Premières Nations, j'ai observé 2 Grives solitaire, une Grive des bois , 2 Viréos à tête bleu, un couple de Roselin pourpré qui s'alimentait au faîte d'un bouleau et une femelle de Pic maculé. Dans le Jardin Chinois, en relevant la tête, j'y ai vu une petite Buse, houspillée par une Corneille. Dans un des étangs, un grand Héron pêchait et je crois que c'est une barbotte qu'il avait au bout du bec quand je l'ai vu. De retour vers la Maison de l'Arbre, dans le boisé des Frênes, un Quiscale rouilleux  - Lucette d'Amours

At the second feeder (at the entrance of the grande digue), Dark-eyed Junco could stil be seen with White-throated Sparrows. Finally, I saw a Tufted Titmouse carrying materials to build a nest.

L'île de la Visitation nature park

With a beautiful sunny morning, 39+ people showed up, no doubt all wanted to get some sun-rays after this week's weather and a Canadien's loss . A total of 46 species were observed, like two Spotted Sandpiper, beautiful Wood ducks, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and how could we forget our Ruby-crowned Kinglet, no doubt impressed by the group, who was giving us a little show! Maybe he was getting ready to audition for American Idol?

Also many of us were able to observe the Hermit Thrush, and the Yellow-rumped warblers , who seem to be everywhere in the park. But the best as usually came towards the end of the trip, with the appearance of a beautiful Palm Warbler, that eveyone was able to see and enjoy. Come out and participate in one or all of the Jim Houghton Spring Warbler Walks with an informal group of BPQ members. It’s a perfect start to a spring day.

Thrushes and Thrashers for Beginners: Session 1 - Report

Four birders braved the rain showers at Parc-nature du Bois-de-l’Île-Bizard this morning and saw a total of 50 species of birds. The showers were light and intermittent, the temperature pleasant, +14, and the birds active.

Walking back to the parking lot at the end of the morning a definite warm front was felt which resulted in the thrilling spectacle of migrating hawks. The hawks, almost 200, mostly Broad-winged, passed over our heads between 11:20 and 12 noon.

Montréal, cimetière Mont-Royal: In 1.5 hrs I noted 30 species. Sparrows (Chipping, Song, Fox, Tree and White-throated), Dark-eyed Juncos (over 150), Purple Finch (4), Warblers (25 Yellow-rumped, 1 Palm), Hermit thrushes (3), Killdeer, 2 Ospreys, 24 Double-crested cormorants I also thought I heard the far cry of a Red-shouldered hawk

En 1 heure 30 environ, j’ai pu noter 30 espèces. Bruants (Familier, Chanteur, Fauve, Hudsonien et À gorge blanche), en passant par les Juncos ardoisés (plus de 150), les Roselins pourprés (4), les Parulines (25 à Croupion jaune et 1 à Couronne rousse), les Grives solitaires (3), le Pluvier kildir, 2 Balbuzards pêcheurs, 24 Cormorans à aigrettes. J’ai galement cru entendre de loin le cri d’une Buse à épaulettes. - Eve-Lyne Samson

Verdun, Île des Soeurs: White-throated Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos. both Kinglets, Hermit thrush, Winter wren. about 40 Yellow-rumped warbler, 1 Black-throated blue warbler, 1 Black and white warbler, a Black-throated Green warbler, 2 Palm warbler, 3 Blue-headed Vireos, etc. A total of 46 species. The Common loon is still present on lac des Battures

Bruants à gorge blanche, Juncos ardoisés. Les deux roitelets, Grives solitaires, Troglodytes des forêts une 40taine de Parulines à croupion jaune, une Paruline bleue, une Paruline noir et blanc, une Paruline à gorge noire, 2 Parulines à couronne rousse, 3 Viréos à tête bleue, etc, Un total de 46 espèces.
