Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip Report" May 16

ChâteauguayRefuge Faunique Marguerite-D’Youville

Today's trip to Île Saint-Bernard was enjoyed by 24 participants.  Weather was cloudy but the temperature was a nice 14C at the start and 21C when we finished at 12:45. Everybody had a good look at one of our birds of the day, a Red-bellied woodpecker at the feeder by the grand digue. The other birds of the day were Scarlet tanager and a co-operative Yellow-bellied sapsucker.

At the halfway point it was suggested that on the next visit I bring a rope with hand holds. Like they have for day care. As we were always waiting for part of the group to catch up with the other.

Below is a Baltimore oriole collecting dry grass to build it's nest at the end of a tree branch 20 feet above the ground. Also a House wren was going in and out of the fallen part of a tree.  Territorial and courting behaviour were also quite evident.  Some members of the group witnessed a pair of warbling vireos, where one vireo was displaying a begging behaviour, not the typical wing fluttering, but similar to a baby bird begging with the mouth wide open.

We met André Cyr, who showed us pictures of an American Bittern that he had seen at the grand digue; however, we were not able to find this bird.

Thank you to everyone for an enjoyable day. - Tom Long
