Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip"

2013 Summer Series of Birding - Trip #4 - Saturday, July 13

This week's destination will be a new location for us. Based on a suggestion from Mark Dennis, we will be heading to Ruisseau a Charette de Baie Brazeau, in Pointe Fortune, Quebec, just off the Trans-Canada Highway 40 at the Quebec/Ontario border. This is a spot that Mark visits on a regular basis and has made some very interesting finds here. To facilitate things, we will meet at the Hudson Inn, Exit 17 off Highway 40 and drive to the site in convoy from there. So here are the details.

DATE: Saturday, July 13, 2013
TIME: 8:00 AM – Half day; combination driving/walking trip
MEETING PLACE: Departing from the Hudson Inn parking lot in Hudson, located at Exit 17 off of Highway 40. Please arrive early to be ready to depart at 8 AM sharp. Carpooling from the Hudson Inn to the destination and back may be a possibility for some.

NOTE: For anyone who wishes to go directly to the site and meet us there, enter 275 Montee Interprovinciale, Pointe-Fortune, QC into Google Maps or into your GPS to find the entrance to the site.
Also note that there are no facilities on-site.

Mark describes the site: It is a linear walk through woodland to an open area of wetland, about 1.3km each way. You pass through open areas with meadows (Bobolinks) and at the marsh/lagoon there is a rest area and a watch tower. The marsh has Least Bitterns, rails etc. There is parking for about 15 cars. There is a gate with a sign at the entrance to Baie Brazeau. Drive in and park either side of the old railway building. The trail is obvious from here.

There are a few other good birding spots close-by that we may also be able to visit that could offer up Upland Sandpipers, Bobolinks, Eastern Meadowlarks etc., time permitting.

The forecast is for hot, sunny weather on Saturday. Lots of water, sunscreen, insect repellent, etc. are all good suggestions. If you have any questions, please contact me directly (e-mail or phone 450-462-1459). On the morning of the trip, you can reach me on the BPQ phone at 514-637-2141.
