Montréal, Mount-Royal cemetery:Townsend's Solitaire (Solitaire de Townsend) was present today as well, same place as yesterday with the Robins. I also saw a Hermit Thrush (Grive solitaire) and a Purple Finch (Roselin pourpré) down by the feeders. A part from that it was a variety of other species present as well. - Marcus Nygårds

Candiac: Canvasbacks were still present this afternoon behind the filtration plant in Candiac. On the way back, we went through St. Catherine. Apart from the thousands of Mallards, hundreds of Common Goldeneye, hundreds of various gulls (Ring-billed, Great black-backed and Herring) and hundreds of black ducks, we found a Norhtern pintail, a Wood duck, a Great blue heron and a dozen Gadwalls

fuligules à dos blanc étaient toujours présents cet après-midi à l'arrière de l'usine de filtration de Candiac. Sur le chemin du retour, nous sommes passés par Ste-Catherine. Hormis quelques milliers de canards colverts, plusieurs centaines de garrots à oeil d'or, quelques centaines de goélands divers (à bec cerclé, marins et argentés) et une centaine de canards noirs, nous avons observé un canard pilet, un canard branchu, un grand héron et une douzaine de canards chipeaux. - Louise Dumont et Alain Hogue

Montréal, Pierrefonds: This morning (7h40 AM) I observed a beautiful Short-eared owl (Hibou des marais) perched on a small maintenance cabin, located in the fields just south of the Sainte-Geneviève cemetery. For 15 minutes my presence didn’t bother him or her, until a congress of crows spotted it and chased it into the fields. Obviously this was going to be a hard act to follow but still some nice species were seen in the Cap-St.-Jacques Park. Hudson Christmas Bird Count

The Hudson Christmas Bird Count will be on 27 December. This year due to the date we had to choose, I am missing some people for some sectors. If you want to have a day of pleasure and helping in citizen science at the same time, please contact me and I will assign you to a sector that at the present will not be covered. If you are a member of Bird Studies Canada there is no fee, other have to pay a 5$ fee to cover the administration of the count managed by Audubon Society and BSC.

So if you want to have a great day during the holidays, please email me so I can contact you with instructions, if you haven't done it before it's a fun day and at the end of the day you can join the other members of the count at the St-Hubert in Dorion from 4 to 7pm. Sightings for Thursday December 8th

Dorval: There was an immature California Gull (Goéland de Californie) in Valois Bay, about 150m offshore, late this afternoon at the bottom of Hillside Avenue. It was swimming with both Ringbills and Herring Gulls (Goéland à bec cerclé et Goélands argentés), both immatures and adults (which provide a good side-by-side comparison for those seriously gull-challenged). 18 Canvasbacks (Fuligules à dos blanc) were diving together, in unison, in the same area, about 100 metres from the shore, before rejoining the Scaup (Fuligule) flock close to the shore. Saw the Ring-necked ducks (Fuligule à collier) with them, but not the Redhead. - Bob Barnhurst

Montréal: This in the afternoon in the Mont-Royal cemetery, for an hour I had the chance to observe and photograph with Mr. Jean-Paul Milot the Townsend's Solitaire.

It moves within a small area of the cemetery and to get to where it was observed, use the south entrance of the cemetery which is on Camillien Houde / chemin Remembrance. You have 200 meters to go by heading straight after passing the entrance of the cemetery, you go to the third road on the right you see going down the hill, you take it and immediately upon going down this road, it splits into two, take the road on the left and it is the middle of this road that the Solitaire moved and was eating.

Aujourd'hui, en après-midi au cimetière du Mont-Royal, pendant une heure j'ai eu la chance d'observer et de photographier en compagnie de M. Jean-Paul Milot le solitaire de townsend.
Il se déplace à l'intérieur d'un petit secteur du cimetière et pour se rendre à l'endroit où il a été observé, il faut utiliser l'entrée sud du cimetière qui se trouve sur la voie Camillien Houde / chemin Remembrance. Vous avez 200 mètres à faire en vous dirigeant tout droit après avoir franchi la porte d'entrée du cimetière, vous vous rendez à la troisième allée du côté droit que vous aller apercevoir au bas d'une côte, vous prenez celle-ci et immédiatement en rentrant dans l'allée, celle-ci se sépare en deux, vous prenez l'allée du côté gauche et c'est au centre de cette allée que le solitaire se déplaçait et allait manger. - Lucien Lemay

Dorval: This morning there were about 4000 predominately Greater Scaup (Fuligule milouinan), close in at the eastern end of Valois Bay Among them was a tight bunch of 14 Canvasback (Fuligule à dos blanc) - I did spot two separately so there might be even more. A moulted Common loon (Plongeon huard) beyond them, a couple of Blackback gulls (Goélands marin) disturbing them occasionally, and a dozen Mallard (Canard colvert) - Felix HiltonVictoriaville, réservoir Beaudet: Ross's goose dark morf, there were also, Hybrid Goose Snow x Ross (1), Bonaparte's Gull (7), Long-tailed Duck (4) and the usual ... Mallard, Common Merganser, Common goldeneye and Canada geese.

St-Jean-sur-Richelieu: The Greylag Goose was seen again this morning at 7:10 by the group of Americans, (John Vanderpoel, Doug Koch, Liz and Zeke) and myself. She was on the same large rock on which she was photographed by Marcel Gauthier, there are some days in Iberville on Chemin des Patriotes. This place is in front of the other side of the river in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu where we found parking on Blvd. Champlain in front of rue Cayer. Caution, the road is very narrow and offers little parking. we have requested permission to access private land. The Greylag Goose was still on the rock when I left about 8:15. She probably left with the Canada geese with not long after.

 l'Oie cendrée a été vu encore ce matin vers 7h10 par le groupe d'Americains, (John Vanderpoel, Doug Koch, Liz et Zeke) et moi meme. Elle était sur la meme grosse roche sur laquelle elle était photographié par Marcel Gauthier, il y a quelque jours à Iberville sur le Chemin des Patriotes. Cette endroit est en face de l'autre coté de la rivière à St-Jean-sur-Richelieu ou se trouve le stationnement sur le boul. Champlain en face de la rue Cayer. Attention, le chemin est très étroit et n'offre peu de stationnement. Nous avons demandé la permission pour acceder un terrain privé. L'Oie cendrée était toujours sur la roche quand je suis partie vers 8h15. Elle est surement partie avec les Bernaches du canada pas longtemps après. - Leah den Besten

This morning at the pointe de Maizerets, right in front of the wastewater treatment plant, I spotted a female Canvasback who was sitting with a few Scaup. and about one hour later at the beginning of the bridge for Île d'Orléans (beside the island) I found three male Canvasback near a group of dabblling ducks

Ce matin, à la pointe de Maizerets, juste en face de l'usine d'épuration, j'ai repéré une femelle fuligules à dos blanc qui se reposait avec quelques fuligules. Et environ une heure plus tard, à partir du pont de l'Île d'Orléans (coté de l'île), j'ai retrouvé trois mâles fuligules à dos blanc à proximité d'un groupe de barbotteurs. - Gérard Cyr

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu: Graylag goose boulevard Champlain (beside rue Cayer) - Along with Leah den Besten, we returned to St-Jean-sur-Richelieu in order to find the Greylag after missing it Monday night. This morning, Marcel Gauthier saw John Vanderpoel, who was doing a Big Year but did not see it since he was on the wrong side of the river

This afternoon, the Canada geese came back even later than yesterday around 4p.m., giving us only a few minutes of good light to find the bird for John and his friends (Liz, Doug and Zeke). After about 10 minutes observations, Leah spotted the bird among the geese. We were able to observe a few minutes on his way quietly to the north. Everyone was very happy, especially John who is now 737 species this year

Oie cendrée repérée à partir du boulevard Champlain (angle Cayer) à Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu - En compagnie de Leah den Besten, nous sommes retournés à St-Jean-sur-Richelieu dans le but de retrouver l'Oie cendrée après l'avoir manquer lundi soir. Ce matin, Marcel Gauthier l'a aperçu mais John Vanderpoel qui fait une Big Year ne l'a pas vu car il était du mauvais côté de la rivière
 
 Cet après-midi, les bernaches sont revenus encore plus tard que hier, vers 16h, nous donnant seulement quelques minutes de bonne lumière pour trouver l'oiseau pour John et ses amis (Liz, Doug et Zeke). Après environ 10 minutes d'observations, Leah a repéré l'oiseau parmi les bernaches. Nous avons pu l'observer quelques minutes alors qu'il se dirigeait tranquillement vers le nord. Tout le monde était très content, en particulier John qui en est maintenant à 737 espèces cette année- Simon Duval

Candiac: 11 Canvasbacks (6 females, 5 males) behind the filtration plant. They were in a group of several hundred Greater scaup, Lesser Scaup, and a dozen Ring-necked Ducks
11 Fuligules à dos blanc (6 femelles, 5 mâles) derrière l'usine de filtration. Ils étaient dans un groupe composé de plusieurs centaines de Fuligules milouinans, de Petits Fuligules et d'une dizaine de Fuligules à collier.

Sainte-Catherine, Récré-O-Parc: A Ruby-crowned Kinglet along the fence behind the administration building. There were also 2 or 3 Golden-crowned Kinglet there. Later in the park, there was a band of at least 50 Cedar Waxwings

Mirabel:  a Snowy owl was present on rang Ste-Dominique. The other side on rang Ste-Marie, there were nine Wild turkeys with hundreds of Canada geese. Between the two rangs there was an adult Red-tailed hawk and two Rough-legged hawks with dark morf.

Un harfang des neiges était présent sur le rang Ste-Dominique cet après-midi. De l'autre côté sur le rang Ste-Marie, il y avait 9 dindons sauvages en compagnies de centaines de bernaches du Canada. Chris Cloutier, a new BPQ Board member, currently works as the Interpretive Naturalist and Events coordinator for the Morgan Arboretum. He leads guided walks and workshops on a wide array of topics, from birds and butterflies, to spiders, trees, wildflowers, frogs, and ecology. He has been a nature interpreter for nearly three full years and a keen naturalist his entire life.

He graduated with distinction from McGill University's Macdonald campus in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. His degree program was Applied Zoology. He specialized in the field of Entomology (insects and spiders).

Repentigny: A Northern Hawk Owl perched on top of a small tree in Repentigny, bordering the agricultural field in front of the school Félix-Leclerc. She stayed perched at the top of the tree about 5 minutes and then going northeast.

Baie-du-Febvre: 3:20 this afternoon, a Snowy owl was atop the structure of the observation blind on route Janelle. He then flew to perch in the field near the intersection of Route 132 and route Janelle

At île Goyer, I found a new cavity with an Eastern Screech Owl where it warmed in the sun and there was a Belted kingfisher in the channel between île aux Foins and île Goyer.

In St-Basile-le-Grand, I was able See a Great Horned Owl, a roost of 80 Red-winged Blackbirds (all female) also Northern mockingbird along the 223 at the edge of McMasterville

Grand Cormoran traîne toujours au bassin de Chambly ainsi qu'un Cormoran à aigrettes, une 60 Mouettes de Bonaparte et 3 Plongeons huards.

À l'île Goyer, j'ai trouvé une nouvelle cavité avec un Petit-duc maculé qui s'y réchauffait au soleil et il y avait un Martin-pêcheur d'Amérique dans les chenaux entre l'île aux Foins et l'île Goyer.

Deauville: Canvasback duck was still on Petit Lac Magog. He was with a group of Barrow Goldeneye. There was also on the lake a Red-necked Grebe and a Common Loon

Montréal, parc Jean-Drapeau: Today and I saw a Pine Warbler, probably a young male, who fed with chickadees, creepers and Golden-crowned Kinglets along the canal near the Pont de la Concorde. Many dabbling ducks were present at the plage Doré (beach) in addition to a male Long-tailed Duck. I also saw 350 mallards, 35 gadwall, 25 American Wigeon



aujourd'hui et j'ai pu observer une Paruline des pins, vraisemblablement un jeune mâle, qui s'alimentait avec des mésanges, grimpereaux et Roitelets à couronne dorée en bordure du canal près du pont de la Concorde. Beaucoup de barboteurs étaient présents à la plage Doré en plus d'un Harelde kakawi mâle. J'ai pu noter 350 colverts, 35 chipeaux et 25 Canards d'Amérique. -Samuel Denault

St.-Barthelemy area and found 2 Snowy Owls (Harfang des neiges), one almost pure white (assuming male) while the other was heavily marked and relatively bulky in appearance (assuming a female). There were also 5 Rough-legged Hawks (Buse pattue), mostly dark-morph, and a lone Red-tailed Hawk (Buse à queue rousse)
Berthierville there were relatively few birds but I did have a Northern Harrier (Busard Saint-Martin), on the ground eating kill. There were also 2 Rough-legged Hawks (Buse pattue),  and 24 Hooded Merganser (Harle couronné) among other species. - Charlie Nims
