 7:30 a.m. From south shore (132 or Highway 20). Take 25 north, then take exit 1 toward Parc des Iles de Boucherville. From North shore (Metropolitain), take 25 south / tunnel Lafontaine, and then as soon as you leave the tunnel, take exit 1 toward Parc des Iles de Boucherville. We will meet in Front of the old Hotel des Gouverneurs, on the road to the Parc des Iles de Boucherville. Admission: $8:50 per person. We will explore different habitats on Ile Charron and Parc des Iles de Boucherville : lake, river, wooded areas looking for waterfowl, raptors, songbirds that are numerous in the area at this time of the year. Half-day trip.

PQ Field Trip Report - Saturday, September 1 - Dundee, QC

16 birders were actually happy to see some overcast skies today at the Lac St-Francois Reserve in Dundee. It was already 20 degrees C. early in the morning and the humidity was rising quickly. The clouds throughout most of the morning helped to keep the scorching rays under wraps. The birds seemed a little quiet, not expending too much energy throughout the morning. Persistence paid off though as what we thought would be a short species list turned into a respectable 50 species for this time of the year. We were also very please to welcome Mustafa Kasapoglu, from Turkey, in Montreal to visit his daughter at McGill University. Thanks to Bob and Anne Tittler for giving him a lift to the field trip. Just about all the birds he saw were lifers for him. Now on to today's results.

IMPORTANT NEWS: Bird Protection Quebec announces its latest property acquisition

Bird Protection Quebec, founded in 1917, is the oldest bird conservation oriented not-for-profit charity in Canada.

As we enter our second century of bird and bird habitat protection, Bird Protection Quebec is pleased and proud to announce our latest acquisition, approximately 87 acres of land on the north-east side of Montée Biggar, https://goo.gl/maps/qJDw4v4f6Nn in the municipality of Godmanchester, Quebec, on August 13, 2018.

This newly protected property is approximately 1700 meters (5579 feet) long by 210 meters (689 feet) wide, located north-west of the city of Huntingdon. Montée Biggar runs north-west from Ridge Road to 4e Rang and is approximately 2.25 kilometers in length.

Montée Biggar is known as one of the most productive birding spots in south-western Quebec, with hundreds of birding enthusiasts visiting the site each year to experience the diversity of species found there. Since the beginning of 2018, 124 species of birds have been found on the site. Looking back on eBird for the last 10 years, no less than 174 species have been spotted.

Montée Biggar is perhaps best known as a significant breeding ground for the endangered Golden-winged Warbler as well as the hybrid Brewster’s Warbler. Many other interesting species have been discovered breeding here including Eastern Towhee, Indigo Bunting, Brown Thrasher, Gray Catbird, Field Sparrow, Scarlet Tanager, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Black-billed Cuckoo and numerous species of warblers.

A special event will take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 9 am. Bird Protection Quebec will officially inaugurate the new Montée Biggar sanctuary. Members of the Board of Directors will give a presentation. This will be followed by a field trip along Montée Biggar. Full details of the event will be made available as the date approaches. Plusieurs autres espèces intéressantes nichent également sur ces terres, notamment le Tohi à flancs roux, le Passerin indigo, le Moqueur roux, le Moqueur chat, le Bruant des champs, le Piranga écarlate, le Pic à ventre roux, le Coulicou à bec noir et de nombreuses espèces de parulines.

Un événement spécial aura lieu le samedi 6 octobre 2018, à 9 heures. Protection des oiseaux du Québec procédera à l’inauguration officielle du nouveau sanctuaire de la montée Biggar. À cette occasion, des membres de notre conseil d’administration feront une présentation. Suivra une sortie sur le terrain le long de la montée Biggar. 8:00 a.m. Meet at the Visitor Centre parking lot. If you are taking the Mercier Bridge from Montreal go (left) east on Highway 132 for 4.5km to Highway 730. Take Highway 730 to its junction with Highway 30. Proceed west on Highway 30 for approximately 33 km to the exit for Highway 530. Take Highway 530 until its end. Turn left onto Highway 132, crossing the bridge, and continue approximately 33km past Sainte-Barbe and Saint-Anicet to Cazaville. Continue another 8 km on Hwy 132 past Cazaville to chemin-de-le-Pointe-Fraser. Turn right on this road and meet at the visitor centre parking lot about 1 km along on the left.

An alternative route, especially from the West Island, is to take Hwy 20 or 40 west past Vaudreuil-Dorion to Highway 30. Take Highway 30 (Toll $2.50) and then exit onto Highway 530 and continue as per instructions above.

Allow about 1.5 hours from Montreal. Looking for waterfowl, raptors, and migrating passerines. Half day.

Prendre l'autoroute 530 jusqu'au bout. Tournez à gauche sur la route 132, traverser le pont et continuer environ 33 km, en passant par Sainte-Barbe et Saint-Anicet jusqu’à Cazaville. Continuez encore 8 km sur la route 132 passé Cazaville jusqu’au Chemin de la Pointe-Fraser. Tournez à droite sur cette route et rendez-vous au stationnement du centre d’accueil sur la gauche à environ 1 km.

Un itinéraire alternatif, en particulier depuis l’Ouest de l’Ile de Montréal, consiste à prendre l'autoroute 20 ou 40 ouest passé Vaudreuil-Dorion jusqu’à l'autoroute 30. Prenez l'autoroute 30 (frais de 2,50 $), puis sortez sur l'autoroute 530 et continuer en suivant les instructions données ci-dessus.

Prévoir environ 1h à 1h30 de route à partir de la région de Montréal. Espèces recherchées : sauvagine, rapaces, passereaux en migration. Demi-journée.

BPQ Field trip report for Aug 25, 2018 at PN du Bois-de-l'île-Bizard

On this warm and sunny day seventeen birders joined the BPQ walk. Temperature with the humidity was well into the 30’s by the end of the day. If cicadas were birds they would have been the most numerous counted on this day. They were singing throughout most of the walk.

If Hema Quebec collected mosquitos they might solve the blood shortage as many of us were robbed of our blood during the walk. 

All of the usually filled water swamps were completely dry and the normally running streams were also barren of water.  Sadly there is no signs of advancement of work on the boardwalk across the little pond. Due to the height of the cattails and phragmites it was hard to get good views of the ponds, some ventured out onto the unstable dock remnants to get better views. 

Besides the high Grackle numbers due to them flocking already, Goldfinches were the second most numerous bird. Followed closely behind by Red-eyed Vireos and Chickadees. Surprising was the number of Orioles and Flickers. Blow is the list of 40 species seen during the walk.

2018 BPQ Summer Series Trip #6 Report - Sat. Aug. 11

9 birders participated in a driving trip starting out in St-Lazare, heading west through Ste-Marthe, St-Justin de Newton, across the Quebec/Ontario border and north to the Carillon Dam at Pointe-Fortune, QC. It was a beautiful sunny, warm day as we explored a variety of habitats. We were pleasantly surprised with a nice mix of shorebirds in an unlikely spot; a shallow pond of water in the midst of a buckwheat field on the Quebec/Ontario border near the town of St-Eugene, ON. We finished the day with an impressive species count of 64. Here is our list for the day. We haven't broken it down into specific areas that this point, but we're working on it, for e-Bird purposes. BPQ 2018 Summer Series Trip #5 - Report

20 birders turned out on a hot and humid morning at Parc-nature de la Pointe-aux-Prairies, at the eastern end of Montreal island. We welcomed the overcast skies as that helped to keep the heat down...somewhat. While we all hoped for a great number of birds, there was one star celebrity bird that everyone was hoping for and it didn't disappoint. The Black-bellied Whistling Duck, one of two of these birds that turned up at this location a couple of weeks ago, was found in its usual hangout, with a group of Wood Duck on one of the waterways in the park. Everyone managed very good looks at the rare visitor. It turned out to be a fairly productive morning, even with the high humidity level. We came away with a total of 37 species. Here is our list:
