Isle verte: Around 11:30, I observed an adult Lesser black-backed gull and a Laughing gull not far from the pont de la rivière verte. The Laughing gull flew eastward and I did not manage to find her again, but the Lesser black-backed gull was still there when I left

Montréal, Ville St-Laurent: This morning at 11:30, I saw a Snowy owl when I was driving on the 40 heading east and taking the entrance for 13 North. He was on the mound of earth at the entry for Highway 13 North. Surprising for April 10. It was being harassed by two crows

Il était sur la butte de terre dans cette entrée d'autoroute 13 Nord. Assez surprenant pour un 10 avril. Il se faisiat harceler par deux corneilles. - Michel Juteau

8h00 De l'autoroute 40, prendre la sortie pour le boul. St-Jean nord et continuer sur celui-ci jusqu'au boul. Gouin. Tourner à gauche (ouest) sur Gouin et continuer jusqu'au boul. Jacques-Bizard. Tourner à droite (nord) sur Jacques-Bizard et traverser le pont. Tourner à gauche (ouest) sur le boul. Chevremont et continuer jusqu'à la Montée de l'Église. Tourner à droite (nord) sur celle-ci et continuer jusqu'au chemin du Bord-du-Lac. Tourner à droite (est) sur celui-ci et continuer jusqu'à l'entrée du parc (environ 1 km). Stationnement : 8,00 $. Espèces recherchées : sauvagine, rapaces et passereaux en migration. Demi-journée.

Tourner à droite (nord) sur Jacques-Bizard et traverser le pont. Tourner à gauche (ouest) sur le boul. Chevremont et continuer jusqu'à la Montée de l'Église. Tourner à droite (nord) sur celle-ci et continuer jusqu'au chemin du Bord-du-Lac. Tourner à droite (est) sur celui-ci et continuer jusqu'à l'entrée du parc (environ 1 km). Stationnement : 8,00 $. Espèces recherchées : sauvagine, rapaces et passereaux en migration. Demi-journée.

Baie du Febvre
Cloudy skies, cool temperatures and steady winds from the NNW at 20km/h greeted 13 BPQ birders at Baie du Febvre this past Saturday. Conditions felt much colder than that description would indicate and I felt a little like "little Bo-Peep who lost her sheep" as the morning wore on and our numbers dropped off to two. But then we rounded up a few "strays" at lunchtime and 6 of us headed for the Parc Ecologique L'Anse au Port near Nicolet. Upon our arrival the number of snow geese was very low with probably only a few hundred visible in the field areas that were still flooded. They were outnumbered by the Canadas. But by about 10:00 a.m. flocks of snow geese started to appear from the southwest and continued to arrive in waves for the next hour or two. A conservative "guesstimate" of numbers would be in the 30 000 range but there may have been many more. (I would appreciate knowing if there was a more official count done that day by anyone associated with the Interpretive Centre at Baie du Febvre so that we could check our estimates). The birds seemed to settle in for the day and were only disturbed by the occasional bald eagle passing by. Other waterfowl were present in fairly large numbers but were spread out over the fields making counting extremely difficult. The numbers below are very conservative. The species which really stood out was pintail which seemed to be the most common duck present although green-winged teal may have been as numerous if less conspicuous. Surprisingly mallards seemed not to be that numerous with probably as many or more black ducks present. Pied-billed grebes made an impressive showing with at least a dozen being present in the various spots visited. Passerines numbers were very limited which may have something to do with the cold conditions. Snow buntings doing impressions of shorebirds around some muddy puddles were a nice surprise. Our extended trip to Parc Ecologique L'Anse au Port only produced a few new species but the boardwalk and tower would seem to have good potential for a little later in the spring season and tower offers a great view of Lac St Pierre and surroundings. Hawk watching on a suitable day?? Our complete list of 44 species is below but keep in mind that most estimates of numbers are on the low side. Montréal: Mount royal cemetery yesterday afternoon was a bit on the cool side with a slight wind. 2 highlights of the day were a flyby of 2 Sandhill cranes (Grues du Canada) heading west at about 4:00pm and a pair of mating Cooper's hawks (Épervier de Cooper) when we were heading out at 5:00pm. Also golden-crowned kinglets, northern flicker and brown creeper (roitelets à couronne dorée, pic flamboyant et grimpereau brun) - Karen & George Dmytriw

8:30 a.m. Meet at the Route Janelle lookout at Baie du Febvre. Two possible driving routes. First route: Take Hwy 30 east to Sorel and then Hwy 132 east to Baie du Febvre. Look for Route Janelle on your left.
Alternate route: Take Hwy 20 east to Exit 185 past Drummondville and then Rte 255 north to Hwy 132. Turn left and look for Rue Janelle almost immediately on your right. Allow 90 minutes driving time from Montreal. Looking for waterfowl, hawks, early spring migrants and thousands of migrating Snow Geese.All day.
8h30 Rassemblement au poste d'observation (cache) situé le long de la route Janelle, à Baie-du-Febvre. On propose deux trajets. Premier trajet : Prendre l'autoroute 30 en direction est jusqu'à Sorel puis prendre la route 132 en direction est jusqu'à Baie-du-Febvre. Tourner à gauche sur la route Janelle, juste après l'intersection avec la rue principale. Deuxième trajet : Prendre l'autoroute 20 en direction est jusqu'à la sortie 185 située après Drummondville. A partir de cette sortie, prendre la route 255 en direction nord jusqu'à l'intersection avec la route 132. Tourner à gauche sur celle-ci. Immédiatement après, tourner à droite sur la route Janelle. Sightings for Thursday April 5
Montréal: Corner of McTavish and Dr. Penfield a pair of Turkey vultures (urubu à tête rouge) could be seen soaring around the base of Mont Royal. Eventually around 10 individuals gathered, and were flying quite low. After about 5-6 minutes of observation, the Turkey vultures began dispersing. Another bird was seen chasing them. It disappeared for a minute, but returned from overhead and I was lucky to observe the breathtaking stoop of a Peregrine falcon (faucon pèlerin)! Wings stretched beyond the tail, which ruled out any chance of it being a Cooper's hawk. - Joey O'Connor

I was at Baie-du-Febvre yesterday with Charlie Nims, his friend Sheila and Herb Greenslade. We had a very good day despite windy conditions, with 42 species observed. Unfortunately, we could not locate the Eurasian Wigeon that was reported on April 1st/2nd. Most birds were seen at/near the lookouts along Rte 132 and the ponds on Rte Janelle. There were also a few ducks present on the river, at the end of Rte Janelle. Rough-legged Hawks (both dark and light morphs) were seen particularly well, with some birds hunting quite close to the road.

Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip Report"
Saturday morning March 31: I was joined by a group of 18 birders. Though the wind was very present along the St. Lawrence, the sun made the morning increasingly comfortable.
We started our trip at the Parc des Rapides, LaSalle. There we had about 35 Great Blue Herons standing on nests, and a member of the group also found a pair of Great Egrets, visible from one particular spot. They were also on a nest, but at lower height than the Great Blue Herons. At the entrance of the canal between Ile aux Hérons and Ile aux Chèvres, there were two Red-breasted Mergansers on the agitated water; two more were seen in flight. An interesting sighting was a lone Tree Swallow circling over Ile aux Chèvres, at a good height. In the meanwhile, a Double-crested Cormorant landed on the pond. Finally, as we left, a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers flew over us, stopped a minute on a tree and continued on to Ile aux Hérons.
From there, we drove east to two locations along the St. Lawrence River. First, stopping at the end of Crawford Street provided us with a nice group of 100 Common Goldeneye with some Bufflehead mixed in. Three birders found an hybrid Barrow's x Common Goldeneye that subsequently flew east and was not to be found again. That's when we started scanning the horizon to witness a major movement of geese, at a great distance, flying northeast. Although we could not distinguish individuals due to the distance, based on the pattern of the groups in flight, and the direction of the flight, we thought they were likely Snow Geese.
The second stop along the river led us in front of Douglas Hospital. There, a group of 120 Greater and Lesser Scaup (mainly Greater) was awaiting us. A Merlin flew by low and fast, just over our heads.
A subgroup of the initial group of birders continued from there to the Boisé de L'Île-des-Soeurs. We parked at the end of Boulevard de la Forêt.
There we were treated with different views of two Red-shouldered Hawks being mobbed by crows or circling over the woods in flight. One member of the group also found a bird perched on a distant tree, seen from the back.
At one point, we heard a very loud but brief song of a Carolina Wren. From then on we searched for the bird, and Vivek finally found it on the grass on someone's property, but at a good distance. We could make out the bird from its long tail cocked upwards at times, the overall color of the bird and the shape of the head. But finally the bird pearched on some wooded box, well in view, in the sun, and without moving for quite some time. We were then able to enjoy very good and satisfying views of the bird, which turned out to be a lifer for some of the birders.
We also had sightings of two Cooper's Hawks. One was first seen in flight. Later on, we found one bird that went on a tree and started plucking a songbird. That bird kept on giving one note calls. Then, a different Cooper's call (kek kek kek...) was heard nearby and a second bird soon joined the first. The first bird, presumably the male, left, and the second bird, presumably the female, took the food and also flew away.
