Chateauguay, refuge faunique Marguerite-D'Youville: Sharon and I went to Île St-Bernard this morning from 7:30 to 12:30. It was a little chilly at 4C especially satnding near the water, but there was more there today than last Wednesday when we were there.

Vaudreuil, chemin de l'Anse: Ruddy Turnstone (Tournepierre à collier), feeding on the shoreline of Chemin de l'Anse opposite Parc Felix Leclerc, just after the first bend in the road as you enter de l'Anse from Exit 35. It spent most of its time between the two creeks foraging through the washed up algae and is possibly a juvenile. No photos but I did take some video footage through my scope which looks a bit like a sighting from Loch Ness. Other birds of interest were a flock of approx 100 Dunlin (Bécasseaux variable), 2 Pectoral Sandpipers (Bécasseaux à poitrine cendrée), 6 Black-bellied Plover (Pluvier argenté), and 4 Semipalmated Sandpiper (bécasseau semi-palmé) at the same site as the Ruddy; a single Dunlin at L 'Anse-a-l'Ormeas well as Pectoral Sandpipers easily out numbering Semipalmated Sandpipers which I didn't expect.

Sightings for Monday October 8th

Montreal, Westmount Summit Park: Varied Thrush It wasn't in the park itself, but in the forest between Summit Circle and Ridgewood. It was to the left of the path, if you face Ridgewood, and just downhill from the elder bushes. I got a very good look at the bird and, after consulting Sibley, I believe itwas a female: the orange and grey face markings and the breast bandwere quite muted. But, no, I didn't get a photo, even though I actually had a camera with me--just as I emerged from my trance of disbelief enough to think that I ought to try to get a picture, the thrush flew off! I searched the vicinity for some time but didn't see it again.I hope the bird stays around and other people get to see it. The elderberries on both sides of the Ridgewood path are attracting a lot of attention from thrushes, sparrows and the odd warbler. - Zofia Laubitz

Boucherville, Parc de la Frayere : Looks like my "owl season " has gotten off to an early start This morning... after photographing Semipalmated Plovers along the St.Lawrence... at Ducks Unlimited.... I went for a quick look in the woods across the road ( Parc de la Frayere ). Heading back to my car ... I heard this White- breasted Nuthatch calling out non-stop... first thing I thought of... was that it had a Saw-whet.... and sure enough ... hidden way up in a cedar.. with prey... was a Saw-whet owl....I wonder if this is the first sighting in our area, this season.... Marcel had something ....when he said to keep an eye out for Saw-whets coming through !The bird was in cedars to the LEFT of the main path.... about 50 metres along the way into the woods.I took a couple of photos... but nothing special... due to the bird's hidden position. So, two Screeches and a Saw-whet for me ... in three days.. my "owl season " has gotten an early start this fall!

Montreal: This morning (8 :00 – 12 :00) I visited Parc-Nature de la Pointe-aux-Prairies for the first time this fall. I thought the weather was perfect for October, with just a little bit of rain at the end of the trip.

The most interesting activity in terms of passerines was found eastof the parc: a Carolina Wren sang on and off for more than an hour in a small wooded area; many sparrows (Chipping, Song, Swamp, White-throated and White-crowned) foraged in an adjacent field, includinga sole American Tree Sparrow, my first for this fall; a Palm Warbler(with a yellow wash on the belly and drab breast) was also foraging in that same field; two Common Yellowthroats were encountered including a drab individual with no grey on the face, that might have been a first fall female; many Yellow-rumped Warblers (about20) and kinglets of both species, mostly ruby-crowned, were alsopresent. A Winter Wren, always a pleasant sighting, was found at acertain distance from this area, foraging in bushes. - Diane Demers

Montreal, Ste-Anne-De-Bellevue: Hi everyone, a Red-headed Woodpecker flew in front of us as we hawk watched along Chemin Ste. Marie at the old Spar parking lot. It landed in a tree alongside the road before heading toward the large evergreens opposite the Ecomuseum. A young bird flew the same way last year on 16th October. What are the odds and where are these birds coming from? Many years ago a young Red-headed spent the fall and part of the winter near the entrance to the Arboretum.

Bird Protection Quebec field trip

Good morning everyone, Saturday's trip to Oka Park was highlighted (or more precisely unhighlighted) by an almost total absence of passerines. Granted, we spent several hours on the beach and the boardwalk at La Grande Baie, but not having a single warbler or sparrow on our list was an extreme surprise. The warm (mid 20's C) temperatures and moderate southwest breezes seemed to keep migration at a standstill.Nevertheless 14 birders enjoyed enjoyed the last day of summer basking in the bright sunshine.

The beach produced the best birds of the trip with a ruddy turnstone, two black-bellied plovers and 4 sanderlings who caused some ID problems because ofthe backlighting and behavior that was not the usual "let's play tag with the waves" habit so often associated with this species. Ducks were numerous off the beach and in fair numbers in the marsh at La Grande Baie. The numbers listed below are underestimated as many were at long range or being viewed from a constantly listing floating boarwalk and not identified. The vast majority as expected were mallards.

Also spotted were some non-avian species in late summer plumage on the unofficial nude beach section of the park. M-E G. wanted to try for a closer look to make positive identifications but the rest of the group could not be persuaded as there were probably no lifers involved.

Our slim list of 34 species included:
