2018 BPQ Summer Series Trip #6 Report - Sat. Aug. 11

9 birders participated in a driving trip starting out in St-Lazare, heading west through Ste-Marthe, St-Justin de Newton, across the Quebec/Ontario border and north to the Carillon Dam at Pointe-Fortune, QC. It was a beautiful sunny, warm day as we explored a variety of habitats. We were pleasantly surprised with a nice mix of shorebirds in an unlikely spot; a shallow pond of water in the midst of a buckwheat field on the Quebec/Ontario border near the town of St-Eugene, ON. We finished the day with an impressive species count of 64. Here is our list for the day. We haven't broken it down into specific areas that this point, but we're working on it, for e-Bird purposes. ITINERARY: From the Hudson Inn, we will drive south on Highway 201 into St-Lazare checking ch. de Fief, We then head west towards the Quebec/Ontario border along ch. Ste-Marie,through Ste-Marthe & Ste-Justine de Newton, then heading across the Quebec/Ontario border to Lemieux Road & La Grande Montee Road, continuing north to the Carillon Dam in Pointe Fortune.

BPQ 2018 Summer Series Trip #5 - Report

20 birders turned out on a hot and humid morning at Parc-nature de la Pointe-aux-Prairies, at the eastern end of Montreal island. We welcomed the overcast skies as that helped to keep the heat down...somewhat. While we all hoped for a great number of birds, there was one star celebrity bird that everyone was hoping for and it didn't disappoint. The Black-bellied Whistling Duck, one of two of these birds that turned up at this location a couple of weeks ago, was found in its usual hangout, with a group of Wood Duck on one of the waterways in the park. Everyone managed very good looks at the rare visitor. It turned out to be a fairly productive morning, even with the high humidity level. We came away with a total of 37 species. Here is our list:

Driving Instructions: Take Highway 40 East to the exit for Blvd. Gouin (Exit 92). Turn left (west) on Gouin Blvd. and follow it for approx. 2 km. Look for the blue signs indicating “Parc-Nature de la Pointe-aux-Prairies. The parking lot entrance is located on the left heading towards the Pavillon des Marais section of the park, at 12,300 Gouin Blvd. East.

NOTE: Two Black-bellied Whistling Ducks have been seen regularly at this park for some time now. This may be a new species for many of you. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to see them on Saturday

2018 BPQ Summer Series Field Trip #3 Report - Saturday, July 21

Combine great weather with a new birding location for BPQ and 22 participants turn out for a great walk through the McFee Brook Interpretive Centre and Sentier de la Nature in Venise-en-Quebec. The site is a nice laid out hiking trail and winding boardwalk through territory south of Highway 202 just west of the Mississquoi Bay. We tacked on a short visit to Rang des Cotes in nearby Henryville to wrap up the morning with a total of 50 species. Very nice to see a few new faces in the group today as well. From the rendezvous spot we will drive east along Highway 202 to our destination in Venise-en-Quebec.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS: From Montreal, take the Champlain Bridge, Mercier Bridge, or Highway 30 to Highway 15 South –Direction Lacolle, QC/Champlain, NY. Take Exit 6 (Lacolle/Hemmingford/Parc Safari Exit for Route 202). At the end of the exit, cross Rte. 202 into the large parking area to the left between the Esso gas station and Tim Hortons.

We will first visit the McFee Brook Interpretive Centre, located at 703 av. de Venise West. It consists of a lengthy boardwalk that winds through bogs and marshland. 2018 BPQ Summer Series Field Trip #2 Report

Tylee Marsh and Bouthillier Marsh, Rosemere, QC - July 14, 2018

14 people headed out to Rosemere, on the north shore of the Milles-Iles River, north of Montreal, to visit two spots which are within minutes of each other. The early morning showers cleared up just in time for our walk with the cloud cover helping to keep the heat down. We were treated to 35 species of birds, the majority seen from the long winding boardwalk at Tylee Marsh. To make things a little more challenging, there were many young birds present, proving that this site is a very popular breeding spot. Some waterfront views along the Milles-Iles river shoreline helped to add a number of ducks, geese, gulls and terns to our list. Here is the list of our 35 species

Directions: Take Autoroute 15 North to Exit 16 for boul. Ste-Rose. Follow boul. Ste. Rose to Highway 117. Turn left on Route 117 (Curé-Labelle). Follow Highway 117 to ch. de la Grande-Cote. Turn right on ch. de la Grande-Cote and follow to the Tylee Marsh parking lot at 200 ch. de la Grande-Cote.

Alternate Route: Take Autoroute 13 to Autoroute 640. Take Autoroute 640 East. Take Exit 22 to Route 117 (boul. Curé-Labelle South). Turn right on Route 117 South. Turn left on rue Bourbonniere to rue Hertel. Turn right on rue Hurtel to rue Gilmour. Turn left on rue Gilmour. Follow Gilmour to ch. de la Grande-Cote. Turn left on ch. de la Grande-Cote to address 200 ch. de la Grande-Cote, on the right.

From the parking lot we'll explore the marsh from an elevated boardwalk and on trails that lead to the Milles-Illes River waterfront. We will then drive the nearby Marais Bouthillier at 100 ch. de Manoir, also in Rosemere,
