Pointe de Yamachiche: Where the water has began to go down. It was not like the best day, but a pretty good part of the beach was uncovered. Letting us observe shorebirds close enough: Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Solitary Sandpiper (at the mouth of the river), Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, White-rumped Sandpipers, Semipalmated Sandpipers. We saw migratory passage of Sharp-shinned Hawks in which a Cooper's hawk was intermingled. Two immature Bald eagles hovered on the other side of the bay and a Ring-necked Duck was swimming towads the tip.
Later, at Baie-du-Febvre, we saw a Red-necked Phalarope, a Lesser Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Plover, a few Least Sandpiper and Semipalmated Sandpipers. Also: Pied-billed Grebe, Common Gallinules (Moorhen), a Green Heron (very close), Gadwall, American Wigeon, Black Duck, Mallard, Northern shoveler, a Blue-winged teal, Green-winged Teal, Redheads, Ring-necked Duck, thirty Ruddy Ducks, an American Kestrel, etc.
Pointe de Yamachiche: où l'eau a recommencé à descendre. Ce n'était pas comme aux meilleurs jours, mais une assez bonne partie de la plage était exondée. Les limicoles s'y laissaient observer d'assez près : Pluviers argentés, Pluviers semipalmés, Chevalier solitaire (à l'embouchure de la rivière), Grands Chevaliers, Petits Chevaliers, Bécasseaux à croupion blanc, Bécasseaux semipalmés. Nous avons assisté à un passage migratoire d'Éperviers bruns auquel était mêlé un Épervier de Cooper. Deux Pygargues à tête blanche immatures ont plané de l'autre côté de la baie et un Fuligule à collier nageait face à la pointe.
Baie-du-Febvre, nous avons pu admirer un Phalarope à bec étroit, un Petit Chevalier, un Pluvier semipalmé ainsi que quelques Bécasseaux minuscules et Bécasseaux semipalmés. De plus : Grèbes à bec bigarré, Gallinules d'Amérique, un Héron vert (de très près), Canards chipeaux, un Canard d'Amérique, un Canard noir, Canards colverts, Canards souchets, une Sarcelle à ailes bleues, Sarcelles d'hiver, Fuligules à tête rouge, Fuligules à collier, une trentaine d'Érismatures rousses, une Crécerelle d'Amérique, etc. Michel Bertrand

Beauharnois, hydroelectric dam . Today between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm there was a Sabine's gull juvenile in front of the Beauharnois power station. She was near the first point of the island from the east side of the locks. It remained for a good thirty minutes eating near the tip, with juvenile Bonaparte's gulls. There were also dozens of Common terns.

Elle se tenait près de la première pointe de l’îlot du côté est à partir des écluses. Elle est demeurée un bon trente minutes à se nourrir près de la pointe avec des mouettes de Bonaparte juvéniles .Il y avait aussi plusieurs dizaines de sternes pierregarin. - Denis Collins

I guided Jean Francois again, following his lecture, before his return to France. With only a few hours available, we went in search of American Golden Plovers in the Saint-Hyacinthe region. We were able to observe more than 60, divided into several groups in the open fields (there are still few), at Saint-Barnabé-Sud, where they stop every year on their return south. It was not long. In our first attempt in two strawberry fields located across from each other, to both sides of the rang du Bas-Saint-Amable just west of the road chemin de Saint-Barnabé, we were able to admire in the company of two dozen Killdeer (as is often the case) between the rows of strawberries. We then reviewed three groups along the local road from the rang Bas-Saint-Amable to rang Saint-Roch at the edge of a large empty field (broken), then a single individual in a grassy field along the rang Saint-Roch. As we drove to the town road, we also saw 2 Ruddy Turnstone on a pile of earth and 3 Horned larks, including one juvenile. On the same road, 4 Turkey Vultures hovered above us, at very low altitude.
We also saw 2 Northern harriers at Saint-Barnabé-Sud and a beautiful adult Bald Eagle on Rapide-Plat.
For those interested, this is a good time to see American Golden Plovers in the Saint-Hyacinthe region
J'ai guidé Jean François de nouveau, au lendemain de sa conférence, avant son retour en France. Ne disposant que de quelques heures, nous sommes allés à la recherche de Pluviers bronzés dans la région de Saint-Hyacinthe. Nous avons pu en observer plus de 60 répartis en plusieurs groupes dans des champs dégagés (il y en a peu encore), à Saint-Barnabé-Sud, où ils s'arrêtent tous les ans lors de leur retour au Sud. Ça n'a pas été long. À notre première tentative, dans deux champs de fraises situés face à face, de part et d'autre du rang du Bas-Saint-Amable un peu à l'ouest du chemin de Saint-Barnabé, nous avons pu en admirer deux douzaines en compagnie de Pluviers kildirs (comme c'est souvent le cas) entre les rangées de fraises. Nous en avons revu ensuite trois groupes le long du chemin communal allant du rang du Bas-Saint-Amable au rang Saint-Roch, en bordure d'un grand champ nu (fauché), puis un individu isolé dans un champ gazonné en bordure du rang Saint-Roch. Alors que nous roulions sur le chemin communal, nous avons aussi vu 2 Tournepierre à collier sur un tas de terre et 3 Alouettes hausse-col, dont une juvénile. Sur le même chemin, 4 Urubus à tête rouge ont plané au-dessus de nous, à très basse altitude.
Nous avons également observé 2 Busards Saint-Martin à Saint-Barnabé-Sud et un magnifique Pygargue à tête blanche adulte au Rapide-Plat.
Pour les intéressés, c'est le bon temps d'aller voir les Pluviers bronzés de la région de Saint-Hyacinthe. - Michel Bertrand

Continuer sur Côte St-Charles direction nord jusqu'à la rue Main puis tourner à droite sur celle-ci. Continuer jusqu'à la rue Wharf puis tourner à gauche sur celle-ci. Bird Protection Quebec's field trip report
Dundee-Ste Martine field trip report
It seems that yesterday's weather forecast of high temperatures, humidity, and possible rain and thunderstorms kept most birders and birds lying low for the day. Only five birders risked the long trek to Dundee for our field trip to the Lac St François Reserve. Tom Long and I were pleased to welcome Joe and Monique Delesantro from New Jersey who have taken part in a few of Sheldon's trips this summer and new member Makoto Nagano who came out for the first time. We wished we could have shown them a few more birds but we did have a few good sightings.
Highlights of the day were three Bald Eagles all in different plumages, two Sandhill Cranes in a field just outside the reserve (seen by a few of the group just after leaving), the aerial acrobatics of several Northern Harriers coursing the marsh and a determined Sharp-shinned Hawk looking to make a meal of one of the many Red-winged Blackbirds hiding in the phragmites reeds.
As for smaller birds, the bushes and trees were eerily silent as passerines were almost non-existent or hiding very well. Cedar waxwings were the exception to the rule as they were quite common in small groups. Some ducks were flying in the area but for the most part they too were relatively inactive.
A stop at the dam in Ste Martine proved disappointing for both us and a lone Merlin perched in the usual dead tree as shorebirds were almost completely lacking due to high water levels left over from hurricane Irene. Several egrets and herons and a few smaller birds were in the area but little else.

Sightings for Saturday September 3rd
Tadoussac: A very good first day of raptor migration at the dunes today in Tadoussac. For today, no less than 525 raptors were counted, here are the numbers: Turkey Vulture: 3, Osprey: 5, Bald Eagle: 2,Northern Harrier: 18, Sharp-shinned Hawk: 426, Northern Goshawk: 1, Broad-winged hawk: 5, American Kestrel: 56, Merlin: 12, Peregrine Falcon: 2

Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue: We crossed over the locks and walked along the concrete dock. There was several Ring-billed gulls on the left of the dock and some ducks. Then on the concrete pier, a Sanderling I posted some photos here

Montréal: This morning at 'île de la Visitation (12 species) of Warbler -Tennessee, Northern parula, Yellow, Manolia, Yellow-rumped, black-throated green , Blackpoll, American redstart, Bay-breasted, black and white, Wilson's. Also Olive-sided flycatcher, and yellow-bellied flycatcher. Till tomorrow morning.

Lasalle: Tonight, the Nighthawks were over the Islands of the Lachine Rapids. I counted a total of 34 Common Nighthawks at this spot. A group of 24 and a group of 10.
They seemed to stay put and not be passing through. I scanned often over the islands and I counted about the same number of individuals.

This morning at the first light of day, stroll to St. Petronilla for 2 hours of observation at the very end of the street Horatio-Walker. here is some of the species observed at the peak of high tide: Northern Pintail (11) - Horned Grebe (1) - Red-necked Grebe (2) - Bald Eagle (4) - Peregrine Falcon (1) immature - Belted Kingfisher (1) - Numerous migrating Warblers - yellow-rumped, Tennessee, Black and white, Magnolia and Blackburnian - Bobolink (2) migrating
Later in the afternoon in St-Vallier at high tide: - Bald Eagle (1) adult - Northern Harrier (1) - Golden Plover (24) a fine group "compact" observed beside l'anse Mercier - Sanderling (3) - Baird's Sandpiper (2)
Returning to St-Henri - Barn Swallow (15) including several young - Bank Swallow (1)
St. Malachi - Eastern Kingbird (2)
Ce matin dès les premières lueurs du jour, petit tour à Ste-Pétronille I.O. pour un 2 heures d'observation tout au bout de la rue Horatio-Walker: - Canard pilet (11) - Grèbe esclavon (1) - Grèbe jougris (2) - Pygargue à tête blanche (4) - Faucon pèlerin (1) immature - Martin-pêcheur d'Amérique (1) - Nombreuses Parulines en migration; croupion jaune, obscure, noir et blanc, tête cendrée et gorge orangée - Goglu des prés (2) en migration

Sightings for Monday August 29th
Tadoussac 10:30 am, near la pointe rouge, I saw with binoculars a beautiful Northern Fulmar heading west towards the batture aux alouettes. Other nice observations this morning, my first of Arctic Terns season, several Common Terns, Northern gannets. Around 1:15 p.m., I am the dunes lookout and I saw with binoculars, a Brown Pelican!

7:30 a.m. Meet at the Visitor Centre parking lot. From Montreal take the Mercier, Champlain or Jacques Cartier bridge* to Hwy 132 and follow it west through Châteauguay to Beauharnois. At Beauharnois (before reaching the bridge and dam), turn left on Hwy 236 and follow it through St-Étienne-de-Beauharnois, St-Louis-de-Gonzague, and St-Stanislas-de-Kostka until it once again joins Hwy 132. Take Hwy 132 west past Ste-Barbe and St-Anicet to Cazaville. Continue approximately 8 km on Hwy 132 past Cazaville to chemin-de-la-Pointe-Fraser. Turn right on this road and meet at the visitor centre parking lot about 1 km along on the left. From the West Island, take Hwy 20 west to Exit 14 and cross over the river at Valleyfield on the Msgr. Langlois Bridge, along Hwy 201 to join up with Hwy 30, continue west to Hwy 132 and from there to Dundee. About 1 to 1.5 hours from Montreal. After birding the Dundee area, we will return in convoy to Ste-Martine to look for shorebirds. Looking for waterfowl, raptors, migrating passerines and shorebirds. Half day. MAP

Cap-St-Jacques Field Trip Report
Nine birders enjoyed a leisurely walk around Cap-St-Jacques Nature Park yesterday morning under sunny skies, light breezes and warm temperatures (peaking at 24C). A noticeable lack of forest birds kept our species list relatively low and in general the birding was quiet although we did have a few nice sightings. Highlights included a group of 11 young Hooded Mergansers, a Belted Kingfisher attempting to subdue a crayfish by beating it against a rock and good numbers of cedar waxwings eating honeysuckle berries and "hawking" for insects.

Sightings for Monday August 22nd
Boucherville, Parc de la Frayère: Peregrine falcon, 4 Great blue herons, 1 Great egret, about 200 Canada goose, 28 Wood duck, 1 Belted kingfisher etc The water level has declined, this leaves the shoreline uncovered and you can walk (with boots) to Varennes, along the way I saw; Semipalmated Plover - 11, Semipalmated Sandpiper - 8, Sandpiper - 2, Spotted Sandpiper - 7, Turkey vultures - 2

A beautiful morning in St-Vallier for observations. With the tide rising, a lot of action in birds but especially in birds prey that have made their home at l'anse Mercier. Here is a list of key species observed:
- Bald Eagle (4): adult, sub-adult fourth year, and two 1st year immature
- Peregrine Falcon (2): adult and immature literally terrorizing and waders gulls of the area
- Merlin: he also does not give up his place, to chase small waders
- Broad-wined hawk (1)
- Black-bellied Plover (3)
- Bonaparte's Gull (1): juvenile
- Common Tern (2)!: Last fall we could count almost 150 here ... Bizarre!
- Bank Swallow (100): important day of migration for this species
Later in the afternoon returning inland by the "rangs". Around St-Henri, an unusual phenomenon occurs; A gathering of over 100 swallows sitting in the center of the road!?! The wind is very strong at that time and the birds seem to profit from sitting directly on the surface. Of the four species Barn (90%), Tree, Cliff and Bank. Excellent time to take some pictures ...
Une superbe matinée d'observations à St-Vallier. À la faveur de la marée montante, beaucoup d'action chez les oiseaux mais surtout chez les oiseaux de proie qui ont élus domicile à l'anse Mercier. Voici une liste des principales espèces observées:
- Pygargue à tête blanche (4): adulte, sub-adulte de 4e année et 2 immatures de1e année
- Faucon pèlerin (2): adulte et immature terrorisant littéralement limicoles et goélands de l'endroit
- Faucon émerillon: lui aussi ne donne pas sa place en pour chassant les petits limicoles
- Petite buse (1)
- Pluvier argenté (3)
- Mouette de Bonaparte (1): jeune
- Sterne pierregarin (2)!: l'automne dernier on pouvait en dénombrer près de 150 à cet endroit... Bizarre!
- Hirondelle de rivage (100): journée importante de migration pour cette espèce
Par la suite de retour en après-midi par les rangs à l'intérieur des terres. À la hauteur de St-Henri, un phénomène inhabituel se présente à moi; Un rassemblement de plus de 100 hirondelles posées un peu partout en plein centre de la route!?! Le vent est à ce moment très fort et les oiseaux semblent tirer profit en se posant directement sur la chaussée. Du nombre 4 espèces dont rustique (à 90%), bicolore, front blanc et de rivage. Bird Protection Quebec's -"Summer Series" - Trip #8 Report
It's a wrap! Our 8th season of the Summer Series of Birding wrapped up today in wonderful fashion. 12 birders headed out early this morning to bird four different eastern Ontario sewage lagoon locations; St-Isidore, Casselman, Embrun and St. Albert. 7+ hours of birding...and a lunch break, of course, yielded no less than 64 species of birds. Sunny and warm temperatures, combined with an appreciated breeze throughout the day contributed to a great day of birding. However we just managed to complete our birding just prior to a huge temperature inversion leading to a dramatic, almost hurricane like rain, hail and wind storm.
Each of the four sites provided their share of birds but the Casselman lagoons were by far the most productive for shorebirds. Embrun provided us with a few surprises, namely 3 Red necked Phalaropes, a Redhead and a Ring-necked Duck.

Pointe de Yamachiche: a beautiful White-faced Ibis has a brief appearance between 3:30 p.m. & 4:15 p.m., for the great delight of the observers present
I did not see the Stilt Sandpiper today, but other observers told me there was one this morning

Ce soir, à la marée montante, 8 espèces de limicoles étaient présentes à Saint-Vallier: Pluvier bronzé 7, Pluvier semipalmé 35, Chevalier grivelé 4, Petit Chevalier 6, Bécasseau semipalmé 50, Bécasseau minuscule 35, Bécasseau de Baird 2 Phalarope à bec étroit 1 (à l'embouchure de la riv. This morning, around 10:30 I saw a few Chimney Swifts flying near the building that is the chimney swifts roost in Magog.
I parked the car and I counted 14 swifts wheeling all together above the chimney. I wish I had binoculars and time to view the sky There were perhaps many more. I was surprised to still see swifts at this time. I thought they were probably migratory.
Tonight I went to the roost to see if they were migrating birds or local birds. If it had been migrants they would have had all day to continue their journey. When I arrived tonight at 7:50 pm. and left at 8 pm and I counted 24 swifts enteingr the roost.
Ce matin, vers 10.30h j'ai aperçu quelques Martinets ramoneurs qui volaient près du bâtiment qui a la cheminée du dortoir à martinets à Magog.
J'ai stationné l'auto et j'ai compté 14 martinets qui vire voltaient tous ensemble au dessus de la cheminée. J'aurais aimé avoir des jumelles et le temps de bien visualiser le ciel Il y en avait peut-être bien d'autres.J'étais étonné de voir encore des martinets à cette date. Je me suis dis que c'est probablement des migrateurs.
Ce soir je suis allé au dortoir pour vérifier si c'était des oiseaux de passage ou des oiseaux locaux. Si ça avait été des migrateurs ils auraient eu toute la journée pour poursuivre leur route. Et bien ce soir je suis arrivé à 19.50h et parti .a 20h et j'ai comté 24 martinets entrer dans le dortoir. - Benoît Turgeon

Summer Series of Birding 2011 - Trip #8 - Saturday, August 20
Hello everyone. Yes, it's almost painful to say, but this Saturday's trip will be the final one of the 2011 Summer Series. We will be visiting what has become our most popular destination in summers past as we head out to visit 4 of the Eastern Ontario sewage lagoon locations.
The long-range weather forecast for the region, as of today, looks fine, but that of course can change quickly. One thing does seem sure though. It will probably be hot.

7:00 AM – Full day; combination driving/walking trip
MEETING PLACE: Departing from the Hudson Inn parking lot in Hudson located at Exit 17 off of Highway 40. Please arrive early to be ready to depart for Ontario at 7 AM sharp. We have roughly a 70 km. drive from Hudson to our first stop, so thus the need for early start.
ITINERARY: We will visit 4 different sewage lagoons; St. Isidore, Casselman, Embrun and St. Albert. We are hoping for a selection of shorebirds and marsh-dwellers, together with whatever other birds we find throughout the day.
Exploring St. Isidore and Casselman should fill our morning. We will take a lunch break at the parking lot of the Tim Horton's in Casselman prior to heading out to our third and fourth stops in Embrun and St. Albert. You can bring along a lunch or pick up something at a number of restaurants located at the Cassleman stop.
There is a fair amount of walking required at each site, particularly at St. Albert which is the largest of the four sites. Be advised that these lagoons are located in wide open and exposed areas, away from any facilities. They provide very little in the way of shade from the hot sun, and basically no shelter from any possible rainfall. Therefore dress accordingly and bring along plenty of fluids.
Spotting scopes are very useful on this trip. Also, if you have portable two-way radios, please bring them along. They are excellent tools to have on this type of road trip. Car-pooling is highly recommended as parking at a couple of the sites is limited. Cars may be left at the Hudson Inn parking lot.

This is generally quite a long day of birding and, with some cooperation on the part of the birds, this trip should be no different. However, should you choose to leave the group at any point during the day, there is easy access back to Highway 417 from any of the sewage lagoon locations.

I spent the afternoon at Pointe de Yamachiche today! Between 2:15 p.m. ET 4:30 p.m.. The weather was glorious, not too hot, the wind was light .. and no mosquitoes. In addition to ducks, geese, herons, eagles etc. I observed the following waders: Black-bellied Plover 8, Semipalmated Plover 20 +, Greater Yellowlegs 1, Lesser Yellowlegs 5, Spotted Sandpiper 1, Sanderling 1, Semipalmated Sandpiper 10 +, Least Sandpiper 20 +, White-rumped Sandpiper 1, Baird's Sandpiper 5, Stilt Sandpiper 3, Short-billed Dowitcher 1
Two observers told me they saw a Ruddy Turnstone this morning. I did not see it this afternoon
après-midi j'ai passé à la Pointe de Yamachiche aujourd'hui! Entre 14 heures 15 et 16 heures 30. Le temps était radieux, pas trop chaud, juste assez, le vent était léger.. et aucun moustique. Outre les canards, bernaches, hérons, pygargues etc. j'ai observé les limicoles suivants: Pluvier argenté 8, Pluvier semipalmé 20 +, Grand Chevalier 1, Petit Chevalier 5, Chevalier grivelé 1, Bécasseau sanderling 1, Bécasseau semipalmé 10+, Bécasseau minuscule 20+, Bécasseau à croupion blanc 1, Bécasseau de Baird 5, Bécasseau à échasses 3, Bécassin roux 1

après-midi j'ai passé à la Pointe de Yamachiche aujourd'hui! Entre 14 heures 15 et 16 heures 30. Le temps était radieux, pas trop chaud, juste assez, le vent était léger.. et aucun moustique. Outre les canards, bernaches, hérons, pygargues etc. j'ai observé les limicoles suivants: Pluvier argenté 8, Pluvier semipalmé 20 +, Grand Chevalier 1, Petit Chevalier 5, Chevalier grivelé 1, Bécasseau sanderling 1, Bécasseau semipalmé 10+, Bécasseau minuscule 20+, Bécasseau à croupion blanc 1, Bécasseau de Baird 5, Bécasseau à échasses 3, Bécassin roux 1
Deux observateurs m'ont dit avoir observé un Tournepierre à collier ce matin. Je ne l'ai pas vu cet après-midi. - Micheline Bisson

Sightings for Tuesday August 16th
I went birding at sites situated in Rosemere, and stops at the edge of Rivière des Milles-Îles (rue de l'Île Bélair Est, rue Charbonneau, rue Labonté).
During the morning I counted 92 Wood Ducks, the most in my lifetime for this species. Marais Miller (Rue Archambault), there were 56 individuals, mostly young of the year. For once the Mallard was not a majority ...
Marais Miller there were also 4 Green herons, a Black-Crowned Night-Heron, 1 Green-winged teal, 2 American Wigeon, etc..
At the end of rue Labonté, 2 Great egrets, 1 Green Heron, and a MUTE SWAN
Marécage Tylee (swamp), I saw my first group of migrants of the season: 6 Tennessee Warblers, 4 Nashville Warblers, 2 Yellow Warblers, 1 Northern Waterthrush, 1 Bay-breasted Warbler, 1 Philadelphia Vireo. There were also 5 Least sandpiper on the river bank.
J'ai fait de l'ornitho dans quelques sites situés à Rosemère soit le Marécage Tylee (Ch. de la Grande-Côte), le Marais Miller (Rue Archambault) et des arrêts en bordure de la Rivière des Milles-Îles (rue de l'Île Bélair Est, rue Charbonneau, rue Labonté).
Durant ma matinée j'ai dénombré 92 Canards branchus, mon plus grand nombre à vie pour cette espèce. Simplement au Marais Miller, il y avait 56 individus, en majorité des jeunes de l'année. Pour une fois que le Canard colvert n'est pas majoritaire...
Au Marais Miller (Rue Archambault): il y avait aussi 4 Hérons verts, 1 Bihoreau gris, 1 Sarcelle d'hiver, 2 Canards d'Amérique, etc.
Au bout de la rue Labonté: 2 Grandes Aigrettes, 1 Héron vert ainsi qu'un CYGNE TUBERCULÉ.
Au Marécage Tylee (Ch. de la Grande-Côte): j'ai observé mon premier groupe de migrateurs de la saison: 6 Parulines obscures, 4 Parulines à joues grises, 2 Parulines jaunes, 1 Paruline des ruisseaux, 1 Paruline à poitrine baie, 1 Viréo de Philadelphie. Il y avait aussi 5 Bécasseaux minuscules sur la berge de la rivière. - Don-Jean Léandri
