Montréal, parc du Mont-Royal: This morning between 6:00 & 9:30 I saw a good diversity of warblers with 18 species out of a total of 59 species
For the Warblers – 12 Tennessee, 8 Northern parula, 1 Orange-crowned that sang on the cemetery side and observed for a long time, 12 Nashville, 1 Yellow (always rare on Mont-Royal), 5 Chestnut-sided, 4 Cape-May, 15 Black-throated blue, 80 Yellow-rumped, 7 Black-throated green, 6 Blackburnian, Pine male singing in front of the chalet on the mountain, 5 Bay-breasted, 3 Black & white, 5 American redstart, 4 Ovenbird, 1 Common yellowthroat, 1 Canada
Also present: 1 Red-eyed vireo, 1 Indigo bunting, 35 White-crowned sparrows, 2 Peregrine falcons, Great crested flycatchers, House wren etc.

Sightings for Sunday May 16th

Verdun, Lasalle blvd. vis-à-vis rue Clémenceau: Little gull accompanie by 12 Bonaparte's gulls 7-8 pm. The water level is very low, but a dozen Least sandpipers were the only non breeding shorebirds.
2 Red-necked grebes at the end of rue O'Reilly on Île des Soeurs

Mouette pygmée accompagnait 12 Mouettes de Bonaparte ce soir (19h00-20h00)vis-à-vis la Lasalle blvd. et la rue Clémenceau. Le niveau du fleuve est très bas, mais une dizaine de Bécasseaux minuscules étaient les seuls limicoles non-nicheurs.
Il y avait 2 Grébes jougris au bout de la rue O'Reilly à l'IdS. - François Grenon

Jardin Botanique de Montréal Botanical Gardens: Beautiflul morning in the Gardens, good migratory movement and a bit of wind. In one hour the following species were observed (mostly in the First Nations garden ): Pied-billed grebe, Thrushes – Wood, Swainson’s, Veery, Hermit. Gray catbird, Ruby-crowned kinglet, Black-capped chickadee, House finch, Least flycatcher, Rose-breasted grosbeak, Baltimore oriole, Sparrows – White-throated, White-crowned, Chipping. Blue-headed vireo, Warblers – Common yellowthroat, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Ovenbird, Bay-breasted, Magnolia, Tennessee, Black-throated green, Nashville

Beau matin au Jardin, beau mouvement migratoire, un peu venteux. Montréal, parc du Mont-Royal this morning 8:30 - 10:45 there was a good group of migrating warblers a little west of the chalet: Warblers – Tennessee, Nashville, Northern parula, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Black-throated blue, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated green, Blackburnian, Black & white, American redstart, Ovenbird
Near ther cross in a grove near the ground: Mourning warbler (m) and I also added a Common yellowthroat (m)

parc du Mont Royal ce matin de 8h30 à 10h45. Il y avait un bon groupe de parulines un peu à l'ouest du chalet incluant (toutes observées): Paruline obscure, à joues grises, à collier, à
flancs marron, à tête cendrée, bleue, à croupion jaune, à gorge noire, à gorge orangée, noir et blanc, flamboyante, couronnée.
Près de la croix, j'ai trouvé un autre groupe de migrateurs. D'un bosquet près du sol, est alors sortie bien en évidence une belle Paruline triste mâle. J'ai également pu ajouter une Paruline masquée mâle à mes observations. - Diane Demers

Iberville, ruisseau Hazen (creek): Following an invitation of Marcel Gauthier, I went to the ruisseau Hazen, where G. Ethier, R. Belhumeur and R. Chartier were also present. We saw the Yellow-billed Cuckoo at 09:45. It was a little east of the tree that fell on the trail north of the creek.

Suite à une invitation de Marcel Gauthier, je me suis rendu à Iberville au ruisseau Hazen, où G. Éthier, R. Belhumeur et R. Chartier étaient aussi présents. parc-nature de l'île Bizard: Red-headed Woodpecker out of nowhere, perched on a dead tree in the middle of the marsh. Unfortunately, a Redwinged blackbird chased it off after one minute. The Woodpecker flew towards the woods, where I lost sight of it.

Québec, Domaine de Maizerets: Today around 18:00 Catherine Vallieres and I observed a White-eyed vireo (adult) with several kinglets and warblers. The bird frequented the garden of conifers and rhododendrons close to the childrens playground. Where he remained for at least one hour.

Other species present: Yellow-rumped warblers (abondant), 2 Black throated blue warblers, 2 Nashville warblers, 1 Cape may, 1 Blue-headed vireo, 1 Hermit thrush, a dozen White-cowned sparrows

Aujourd'hui vers 18h00 Catherine Vallières et moi observons un Viréo aux yeux blancs (adulte) au en compagnie de plusieurs roitelets et parulines. L'oiseau semble fréquenter le jardin de conifères et de rhododendrons juste à proximité des jeux pour enfants. Il y est resté présent au moins une heure.

Autres espèces présentes: parulines à croupion jaune (abondantes), 2 parulines bleues, 2 parulines à joues grises, 1 paruline tigrée, 1 viréo à tête bleue, 1 grive solitaire, une dizaine de bruants à couronne blanche - Isabelle Deschênes

Ring-billed gulls

Ring-billed Gulls in theGreater Montreal region. The project's goal is to study the behavior of gulls in the middle of urban and suburban in the context of integrated management. We want to determine the distribution and movement of birds, their feeding habitats and population dynamics. Under this project, 1,200 birds were marked in 2009 and the program will continue for the next 2 years. The birds are banded with a ring of steel from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and a plastic ring (yellow or blue) with 3 alphanumeric codes (black or white). If you observe a marked bird, you can send your comments by email (giroux.jean-francois AT uqam.ca) with a photo if possible, date, location with GPS coordinates if available, the number of gulls present and a brief description of the habitat (park, lake, river, mall, ect.) and behavior (feeding, rest ect.).

Goélands à bec cerclé dans la grande région de Montréal. Le but du projet est d'étudier le comportement des goélands en millieu urbain et périurbain dans un perspective de gestion intégrée. Nous voulons déterminer entre autres la distribution et le mouvement des oiseaux,
leurs habitats d'alimentation et la dynamique de la population. Dans le cadre de ce projet, 1200 oiseaux ont été marqués en 2009 et le programme continuera pour les 2 prochaines années. Les oiseaux sont marqués avec une bague d'acier du US Fish & Wildlife Service et une bague de plastique (jaune ou bleu) avec 3 codes alphanumériques (noir ou blanc). Sightings for Tuesday May 4th

Brossard: This morning at the Walmart at Dix 30, Brossard, I heard a Northern Mockingbird (Moqueur polyglotte) singing, and managed to find it along the fence at the northwest side of the parking lot. I was sure I had heard one yesterday at the local park, but couldn't see it. Its probably the same bird as this is the first time I have seen one in Brossard. I took a photo with my cellphone, so its not the greatest. I also took a video of it singing - Dave Myburgh

Montréal, Parc du Mont-Royal: This afternoon, Fanny Senez-Gagnon and I spent 2.5 hrs on Mount Royal. During this short time we have observed a substantial migrations of White-throated sparrows on the south side of the mountain, the groups were fairly easy to count because they all were moving to the northeast.

Our total: 800 White-throated sparrows, 2 White-crowned sparrows, 300 Dark-eyed juncos
Also: 5 Blue headed vireo, 100 Ruby-crowned kinglets, 3 Golden-crowned kinglets, Warblers - 30 Yellow-rumped, 2 Black-throated green, 4 Black-throated blue, 2 Northern parula, 1 Nashville, 1 Blackburnian, 1 Black & white, Wilson’s. 4 Winter wren, 1 House wren, 1 Brown thrasher, 1 Eastern kingbird, 1 Great crested flycatcher, 5 Hermit thrush, 1 Wood thrush

Cet après-midi, Fanny Senez-Gagnon et moi avons passé 2h30 au parc du Mont-Royal. Durant ce temps assez court nous avons observé un important passage migratoire de Bruants à gorge blanche du côté sud de la montagne, les groupes étaient assez faciles à dénombrer puisqu'ils se déplaçaient tous vers le nord-est.

I drove this morning to the area of Saint-Blaise, despite the falling snow. Initial scans of the area near 50e-46e Av, east of Route 223 about 9-9:30 AM and then some other spots in the general area, only produced two yellowlegs, mallards and green-winged teal in the wet areas of the flooded fields. However when I returned to 50e Av about 10 AM I found the Ruff to the south side of 50e, along with an increased number of yellowlegs on both sides of 50e - Larry Haugh - Shelburne, Vermont

Lasalle, île aux Hérons: 4 to 5 pm. Bald eagle, the male is on the nest and the female is perched nearby. Great Blue Herons are busy adding branches to their nest and there are many Great Egrets now. Also seen, a Northern Harrier and Sharp-shinned hawk migrating. A Merlin further north along the Blvd. LaSalle, probably a local breeder. Many Tree Swallows over Heron Island.

16h00 à 17h00, Pygargue à tête blanche, le mâle est au nid et la femelle est perchée à proximité. Les Grands Hérons s'affairent à rajouter des branches à leur nid. Les

Baie-du-Febvre: 3 Ruddy ducks, numerous American coots, many Pied-billed grebes, 5 or 6 Redhead duck, Trees swallows, 4 Ross's geese, 2 Cackling geese, and surprise an early arrival of 2 Pectoral sandpiper-Richard Guillet
Snow buntings, Horned larks, American pipits, and a Lapland longspur in breeding plumage found on Chemin Lacerte, in a worked field. Also a Chipping sparrow, 1 Fox sparrow and a some Golden-crowned kinglets - Micheline Ouellet

Hawk Migration Valleyfield - St. Stanislas de Kostka

I hope that everyone was out birding somewhere the last two days. Surprisingly, Mabel and I were out at the hawksite. No, really, I'm not kidding. And what a remarkable two days of hawk migration it was! Yesterday (Friday) brought 414 hawks during the afternoon and today we had 1133 birds. Included in these totals were over 200 Turkey Vultures (Urubu à tête rouge) - with a few good groups of 20-30 birds - mixed in with 1100 Red-tailed hawks (Buse à queue rousse). (No, it's not a misprint.) Today alone saw 907 Red-tailed hawks funnel by in phalanxes and kettles, by far our best one day total, spring or fall ever (previous high 859 Red-tailed hawks on 11 October 1991.) Hawks began getting up in thermals around 11.00 am and by midday, large numbers of hawks were constantly in view until 4.00 pm. Besides the Vultures we also had good numbers of Northern harriers (Busard Saint-Martin), Sharp-shinned hawks (Épervier brun), Red-shouldered hawks (Buse à épaulettes), and Rough-legged hawks (Buse pattue), all in mixed kettles of hawks. Yesterday's 122 Turkey vultures was a record breaker for a one-day count, by two birds. 17 Bald Eagles (Pygargue à tête blanche) and 9 Golden Eagles (Aigle royal) joined in the fun with 12 being seen over a 10-minute period yesterday afternoon. (The spring eagle total passed 100 around mid afternoon today.) With 77 Golden Eagles already counted it is a safe bet that we will far exceed the previous highest seasonal total of 80, seen in 2005.
