Summer Series - Trip #6 report for July 28th
Montreal: The rain held off and 17 birders enjoyed a long morning walk through the trails of the Ile de la Visitation Nature Park. Overcast skies kept the heat down some and breezes off the Riviere des Prairies made for overall quite pleasant conditions.
The bird of the day was certainly a sighting of a Peregrine Falcon perched near the Hydro Dam just west of the Pie IX bridge. Everyone enjoyed seeing young cedar waxwings being fed by their parents, as well as a spotting of a Baltimore Oriole and some very close-up views of Black-crowned Night Herons.
Surprising in their absence were swallows and warblers of any species.We did finish the morning with a total of 32 species. Here they are.

Summer Series - Trip #5 report for July 21st
Parc National de Plaisance in Plaisance, Quebec, north west of Montreal on the Ottawa River. Blue sky and sunshine throughout the day today for 11 birders on todays outting.
Following up on recent sightings posted at the welcome centre in the park, we hoped that we might come across a few rare species such as the Black-billed Cuckoo and the Sedge Wren, but neither were found today.
We did come up with an impressive list of 53 species though. This is a very impressive birding site. From the park's brochure we discovered that 65% of this park's total area is made up of wetlands and open water. Various habitats are available including marshes, open water, grasslands and forested trails. There is an extensive network of hiking trails and bicycle paths throughout. There are 7 designated observations points. 240 bird species have been recorded in this park, as well as more than 500 species of plants, 33 fishspecies, 13 species of amphibians and reptiles and 50% of all animal species found in Quebec.

Summer Series - Trip #4 report July 14th
Superb weather conditions greeted a large turnout of 19 birders atthe Mount Royal Cemetery this morning. It did seem however that someof the birds may have taken off for summer vacation as we completedthe morning's outing with 30 species.
Although the species count was not large, the quality of birds wasvery good with excellent views of some of the highlight birds of the day including several Eastern Bluebirds, House Wrens, a Sharp-shinned Hawk, American Kestrel, and a flurry of activity from a group of Red-breasted Nuthatches.
We focused our attention predominantly on the Mount Murray andMountain view sections of the cemetery but we also crossed over into a section of the Cote-des-Neiges Cemetery which is incredibly overgrown due to the lock-out of staff there ongoing since May.
We had hoped to find a few of the numerous Indigo Buntings that have been seen recently on the grounds but had to settle for just one female seen early in the morning.Completely missing in action were warblers, of any kind. Not a single warbler seen throughout the almost 4-hour walk today. So, here is our species list for the day.

Tom and I spent a couple of hours going along the outer trail of Ile St-Bernard this morning. We saw/heard 50 species of birds plus 3 deer and a mink.

Summer Series - Trip #3 Report
12 birders participated in today's field trip to "the back-side" of the St-Etienne marshes at St-Etienne-de-Beauharnois. The day began cool and grey with even a few sprinkles of rain. However things improved throughout the morning and we managed to get through to lunchtime with no rain and even some sunshine.
Even with this week's rain the back roads between the marshes and the Beauharnois Canal were in excellent shape adding to an all-around great day of birding.
It was really great to have Lance Laviolette as well as Peter and Ann Tarassoff along on this trip, excellent birders who we just don't see enough of on BPQ field trips. Some of the highlight species of the day included Blue-winged Teal (seen at the end of the trip from the dyke near the farmhouse), Redhead, Ruddy Duck, American Bittern, 5 species of swallows, Marsh Wren, Horned Lark and Bobolink. Our total species count for the day was 57. Here they are. Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Gadwall, Am. Summer Series - Trip #2 Report
9 birders enjoyed a lengthy walk along the Chambly Canal and the Richelieu River in Carignan, Quebec, a part of the Trans-Canada Trail network. It was a bright, sunny morning but actually a little cool for June 30th, but overall very pleasant.
No one other than myself had visited this region before. We all believed that this might make for an excellent birding spot during the migration period given the great selection of habitats several marshes, river front, grassy meadows and forested areas. A long gravel bicycle path winds through the site. As the morning progressed, the bike traffic became fairly heavy at times.
We completed the morning with a total of 33 species. In addition we had two fox sightings. The second sighting was the most exciting, as the fox headed along the path in front of us carrying a late breakfast...what appeared to be either a groundhog or muskrat that was almost as big at the fox himself! The "Bird of the Day", and a surprise to most of us, was a total of 6 Common Goldeneye spotted on the Richelieu River. Here is our complete species list for the day: Am. Summer Series of Birding Field Trip #1 report
5 people turned out at Ile-Bizard this morning in the midst of alight rain shower. The rain let up and the sky eventually clearedmaking for a pleasant morning of birding with a total of 52 species including some excellent sightings.
We were also happy to assist two students from a university in La Pocatiere who were working on an aquatic bird survey as a part of their studies.
Some of the highlights of the day included several sightings of perhaps as many as four Least Bittern; numerous families of Virginia Rail and Common Moorhen; a Cooper's Hawk on the nest feeding at least three chicks, plus a second Cooper's carry food back and forth across the parking lot; several flocks of Cedar Waxwings and two Soras calling.

We were also happy to assist two students from a university in La Pocatiere who were working on an aquatic bird survey as a part of their studies.
Some of the highlights of the day included several sightings of perhaps as many as four Least Bittern; numerous families of Virginia Rail and Common Moorhen; a Cooper's Hawk on the nest feeding at least three chicks, plus a second Cooper's carry food back and forth across the parking lot; several flocks of Cedar Waxwings and two Soras calling.

Mt St Bruno Field Trip Report for June 16th
The last officially scheduled field trip of the season was well attended by birders (if not birds) with seventeen enthusiasts showing up and enjoying a leisurely stroll along the Sentier du Grand Duc. This trail is alittle rougher than others in the park but led through a variety of potentially good habitats near the park's entrance. For the last half hourof the trip we passed through the small but interesting arboetum section of the park, As is often the case at this time of the year, the combination of birds no longer being as vocal this far into the breeding season and a late start (if one goes by "bird standard time" - they have already been up for four hours by the time we started at 8:00 a.m.), we had to work hard for our sightings. Our best avian views were of a very cooperative indigo bunting, several close cedar waxwings and several redstarts in a variety of plumages, not to mention with a variety of songs! Views of both geese and a mallard duck with young in tow were as usual with met with many oohs and aahs.
On the mammalian list were at least one and probably 2 different foxes who crossed paths with us and 2 deer, one of which refused to be disturbed from her morning siesta while lying in a field as we trooped by. Squirrels and chipmunks abounded.
Our complete list of 44 species (several seen only by Jean, Clemence and Carol as they waited patiently early in the morning for the gate to open) is given below.

Bird Protection Quebec: Hudson's evening field trip
Tuesday May 29th, 13 birders enjoyed Hudson's evening field trip in memory of long time BPQ member Marg Hendricks. Marg was a keen birder and along with Mabel McIntosh, banded Saw-whet owls in the Cote Vertu woods. Marg had a collection of bird nests and she gave interesting talks to many school children in the Montreal area.The weather was beautiful last evening, the mosquitoes not bad, and we were ableto observe 46 species.
We had an interesting start to the evening when Felix Hilton found a painted turtle in the process of laying eggs. The evening got more interesting when we spotted an American bittern standing on the rail (as in road ) catching insects.

Report of the Jim Houghton Memorial Spring Warbler Walk at Westmount Summit between 7:00 am and 9:00 am, Tuesday 29 May 2007. 22 birders observed and/or heard 34 bird species this morning. The weather was perfect this morning, sunny and warm. Unfortunately it was also perfect for the leaves on the trees and the birds were not singing very much,which made birding a bit more challenging. But the 19 birders who came out managed to find 40 species, although the number of each was disappointing in most cases.

The Club des ornithologues de Châteauguay did their Annual census of Île Saint-Bernard on Saturday May 19th, with the help of members of the Montreal Biological Society. Twenty-four observers split into three groups and found 100 species. Only six birders enjoyed an overcast morning and were rewarded by 42 species.The highlight was sighting 16 warbler species, including a rare Prairie Warbler. The birds were very active at ground level and high in trees. There was little wind, plenty of leaves, and the rain luckily held off until we were ready to go home.

Field Trip Report - Westmount Summit - May 13
Happy Mothers Day everyone. A cool morning on Westmount Summit this morning. Clear and sunny conditions provided an excellent panoramicview from the lookout for everyone to start the day. Throughout themorning various BPQ members popped in and out of the field trip,resulting in an overall total of 25 birders.
A small group of us also headed off to Mount Royal Cemetery late in the morning to wrap up the trip.The buzz word of the morning was certainly "quiet". It has been avery long time since I have been on a field trip where there were so few bird sounds in the air. Persistence did pay off though. A Black-throated Green Warbler kicked off the morning, visible below the lookout and, thanks to Chuck, everyone was able to get a great view of one of the Eastern Screech Owls taking in the morning sun in hisfavourite tree trunk. The rest of the birds really had to be searched out with the group circling the park several times throughout the morning.
The morning was complete with a total of 42 species, with a tentativebut probable 43rd species that several of us thought to have been a Yellow-throated Vireo. That would be a lifer for many in the group,but our view of it was brief. The bird was seen at the western end of the park. I personally would have preferred a much longer view ofthe bird but all the field marks seemed to fit.Other highlights included a Coopers Hawk sitting over our heads whilewe were scouring the trees for warblers! (might explain why therewere none where we were looking);
8 species of warblers; a Broad-winged Hawk, Eastern Bluebirds and a Gray Catbird, each at the cemetery; and a Pileated Woodpecker. So, here is the species list for the morning. I will indicate (MRC) beside those species seen at the cemetery.

May 12th, Field Trip Report for Parc d'Oka
Yesterday's field trip to Oka Park (Saturday May 12) saw eleven birders enjoying a cool, breezy but sunny day exploring several areas of the park including the woods near the beach area and the trail to the La Grande Baiemarsh.
The woods were very quiet at times and the warblers few and far between but the good company and several interesting sightings certainly made up for the lack of numbers. Other passerine numbers also seemed very low.
Highlight of the day seen by EVERYONE was a hard-earned scarlet tanager singing high in the canopy. The group worked extremely diligently makingsure everyone finally spotted it and had a view through telescopes.
Highlight of the day seen by a SELECT FEW was a BLUE-GRAY GNATCHER near the tower at La Grande Baie. (A first in Quebec for your leader) Highlight of the day seen by a VERY SELECT FEW was a YELLOW-THROTED VIREO also at the tower. Honourable mention goes to a soaring double-crested cormorant giving us beautiful views of this interesting behavior. Our total of 69 species included:

A great fall-out of migrating birds last night gave 30 observers lots to look at this morning. 39 species included numerous warblers and sparrows, welcome spring birds.The weather was sunny and warm, with a wind starting about 8:30 am. The leaves are beginning to show themselves, but not completely out yet. There was much activity at ground level, and birds were rushing back and forth.
