BPQ Field Trip Report - Hudson- Feb 3/07

Sheltered areas and close to feeders were the places to be yesterday on Hudson's field trip. The -8C temperatures along with strong winds made birding in open areas uncomfortable. The sun warmed us up as the morning progressed however and our group of 12 birders saw 16 species of birds. The birds of the day were a Cooper's hawk which flew across the trail and gave us all excellent looks and an American robin which was just about the last bird of the morning. Thanks to Wayne Grubert for helping out and to the pleasant group of people who made the morning so enjoyable. The following is the complete list of birds seen.

Barbara MacDuff

Cooper's hawk (Épervier de Cooper), 5 Mourning doves (Tourterelle Triste), 4 Downy woodpeckers (Pics mineur), 5 Hairy woodpeckers (Pics chevelu), 1 Pileated woodpecker (Grand pic), 15 Blue jays (Geais bleus), 15 American crows (Corneilles d'Amérique), 30 Chickadees (Mésanges à tête noire), 10 White-breasted nuthatch (Sittelles à poitrine blanche), 3 Brown creeper (Grimpereau brun), 1 American robin (Merle d'Amérique), 7 American tree sparrow (Bruant hudsonien), 5 Dark-eyed junco (Juncos ardoisés), 3 Northern cardinals (Cardinaux rouges), 30 American goldfinch (Chardonnerets jaunes), 1 House sparrow (Moineaux domestiques)

Sightings for Saturday January 27th

There seems to be a sudden invasion of longspurs! I took a short drive along Chemin Ste Julie in Ste-Marthe looking for Snowy owls (Harfang des neiges) (one distant almost pure white bird) but was amazed by the number of longspurs (Bruant lapon)I encountered in several differentflocks - probably close to 100 in all. As a matter of fact I almost ignoredthe first group of 30 because they flew out from a farmer's driveway and I assumed they were house sparrows until they landed in front of me. In acomplete reversal of normal ratos there was one snow bunting (Bruant des nieges) mixed in. A little farther along was a mixed group (about half and half) totalling about 100 birds. I'm not sure I have ever come close to seeing so many longspurs in one day.

BPQ Field Trip Report - Ile-Ste-Helene - Jan. 20/07

Given the weather forecast for today, I was very pleased to have atotal of 9 birders for today's walk around Parc Jean-Drapeau. Themajority of areas we covered were fairly well sheltered from thewind. There were a few open spots where walking into the wind wasrather unpleasant though. No real "celebrity" species to reporttoday, but Sheila did spot a fox crossing the road close to theHelene de Champlain restaurant.
We ended the morning with a total of 11 species. They were Mallard (Canard colvert), Common Merganser (Grand harle), Ring-billed Gull (Goéland à bec cerclé), Great Black-backed Gull (Goéland marin), Rock Pigeon (pigeon biset), Downy Woodpecker (Pic mineur), American Crow , (Corneilles d'Amérique), Black-capped Chickadee (Mésanges à tête noir), Brown Creeper(Grimpereaux bruns), European Starling (Étourneaux sansonnets), and House Sparrow (Moineaux domestiques). Our Bird of the Day was the Brown Creeper.
They managed to elude usfor most of the morning but finally 6 of them put in a simultaneousappearance in the woods across from the restaurant. In addition to our birds, and the morning exercise of the walk, wemanaged to get a sneak-preview of the Fetes des Neiges event gettingunderway next weekend. Thanks to everyone who turned out this morning.
