The BPQ field trip to Alfred, Ontario, was spectacular on this beautiful late September day. We had a terrific time birding in two excellent areas: the Alfred Sewage Lagoons and the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail. There were many highlights. At the lagoons, in addition to 2 lovely Pectoral Sandpipers in flight everyone had the pleasure of seeing a Virginia Rail and a Marsh Wren, the BIRD of the DAY (both). There was also a great selection of ducks and a rare species of sparrow. Had the following sparrow been seen by everyone it would surely have been voted bird of the day; Pierre Tellier saw the first one, a NELSON'S (Sharp-tailed) SPARROW and I saw the second one which Pierre confirmed, his second. Later on the same day and during subsequent days this rare sparrow unfortunately could not be found again!!
In all 18 birders encountered 55 species. BPQers were joined by members of the Club de Miroise de l'Est ontarien, the recently founded first francophone birding club in the province of Ontario.
