Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip Report" - Saturday, September 19

This morning started off pretty nicely for the 42+ people who attended the BPQ's Fall Warbler Walk at l'île de la Visitation, with some warbler activity next to the welcome center. I think the group enjoyed seeing the Black-throated Green, Wilson's & Magnolia Warblers bathing & feeding just inches from the ground. Who said warblers were always hard to see!

A total of 50 species (4 species added before & after the walk) were seen by the group which included 9 warbler species.
Than we headed towards the island but made a couple of stops to see our Eastern Screech Owl, who seemed to be impressed seeing so many people early in the morning. Our Black-crowned Night Herons at the 'Old Mill or Bistro area' always popular, especially the juvenile who's been the 'Rock Star' the pass weeks.

On the island it was quiet for species, with the weather (winds, etc.), but we still managed to observe a few Swainsons' Thrushs & Gray Catbirds. Other trails located off the island, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Phoebe & Wood-Pewee were also seen by group.

Birds of the DAY, Black-throated Green & Wilson's Warblers very low to the ground & our 'very high in a tree', Eastern Screech Owl.

For those not aware, I'm leading a field trip tomorrow at l'île de la Visitation at 7h30-8am (chalet is meeting area) for those interested in coming. The weather tonight & tomorrow looks interesting for migration, so we might see new species and have other chances to practice our fall warblers.

The next few days and week might be the last major wave of 'warblers' passing thru the park, at least for seeing many species at a time until next May! - Joël Coutu
