Longueuil, Parc Regional & St-Hubert Airport
Heavy fog early, and rain later in the morning didn't dampen the spirits of 12 birders who came out for today's trip which started at the Parc Regional in Longueuil. The park was very quiet with the exception of the very friendly and hungry Black capped Chickadees. Other than a few Cardinals, House Sparrows, Canada Geese and a White-breasted Nuthatch, the woods and the open fields were void of birds.
There were several White-tailed Deer seen, including a few coming out of the woods on to the walking paths accepting handouts. Once the rain started, we decided to return to the parking lot and head off to what we hoped would be a more productive area, St. Hubert Airport. It didn't take long for things to change as we were greeted upon our arrival with two Rough-legged Hawks, both in dark phase. A few more were seen before the end of the morning, together with a Red-tailed Hawk and a Cooper's Hawk.
Having seen the reports of at least 3 Snowy Owls around the airport grounds in the last week, we began our search. On chemin de l'Aeroport, we were rewarded with a Snowy Owl found perched a top one of the runway markers, Runway 28 Marker to be exact! Everyone had a chance to see the bird in the scope, making this our bird of the day.
We finished our day with the following 21 wet species!
Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Mallard, Great Blue Heron, Cooper's Hawk, Red-Tailed Hawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Ring-billed Gull, Rock Pigeon, Mourning Dove, Snowy Owl, Blue Jay, American Crow, Common Raven, Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, European Starling, Dark-eyed Junco, Northern Cardinal, American Goldfinch, House Sparrow.
Thank you to all who turned out this morning - Sheldon
