Bird Protection Quebec's Field Trip Report - November 17, 2007

On the way to the rendez-vous, I saw a Harrier, a Peregrine and thousands of Canada Geese.
Eight hardy souls joined me at Ste-Martine for a bright but cold and very windy outing.
In total we saw, at a guess, 15K Canada Geese, mostly on the Chateauguay River but smaller numbers else where, 38 Am. Black Duck, 50 Mallard, 100 Northern Shoveler, 8 Green-winged Teal, maybe 2K Scaup (too far to differentiate; there might have been Ring neck amongst them), 6 Hooded Merganser, 6 C. Merganser, 1 Pied-billed Grebe, 2 D/C Cormorant, 1 Osprey - Maple Grove, rue MacDonald: , a second Northern Harrier, 1 Rough-legged Hawk, 1 Merlin, 200 Ring-billed Gulls, 4 Blackbacks, 100 Rock Pigeon, 2 Blue Jay, 10 American Crows, 14 Horned Lark, 17 Black-capped Chickadee, 1 White-breasted Nuthatch, 1 American Robin, Starling, 6 American Tree Sparrows, 7 Snow Bunting, House Finch, 4 American Goldfinch and 75 House Sparrows.

Soon after we split up, Sheldon and Darlene spotted a couple of Mourning Dove.The bird of the day would have to be the Osprey, although 100+ Shoveler on the Mercier sewage ponds were possibly more unusual.
