BPQ Field Trip Report - Saturday, September 29

16 birders came out to visit a new location for a BPQ field trip today. A fairly new park, Parc des Etang-Antoine-Charlebois in St-Amable. The park has only been open for a few years now. Although a little quiet today, everyone enjoyed visiting a new location that looks very promising for future outings, particular during spring migration. The site has nicely laid out trails snaking through a series of ponds, surrounded by a wide variety of trees and plants. Work is being conducted on additional trails for the future. A very nice morning's walk on a great day, weather-wise. Thanks to everyone who turned out for the trip. Here is our list of 34 species for the day.

Bird Protection Quebec Field Trip - Saturday, 15 September

8:30 a.m. Meet at the defunct Motel Frontière. From Montreal take the Champlain Bridge, Highway 10 east to exit 22, Highway 35 south to St. Jean to join Highway 133 south to Philipsburg. Now that the motel has been demolished the location is not easy to see from the southbound side of the road so continue towards the border crossing. Immediately before the border buildings take the well- marked U-turn on the left to cross over to the northbound side of the road. Look on your right for the large white sign telling drivers to fasten their seat belts - the entrance to the old motel site and the parking area isimmediately beyond it. Note that there are two gravelled entrances - do NOT take the first, it is washed out and impassable; the second entry is excellent. Good choice of trails from long and strenuous to short and easy. Looking for migrating passerines, waterfowl and hawks. Half Day.

20 birders joined the trip today at Ile Charron. Sky was blue all morning and temperature was mild, making it a really enjoyable morning for birding.

Northern wind and colder night made it favourable for some migration movement, and birds were active all morning. We encountered several flocks of warblers as well as thrushes, flycatchers, etc.

We started by the area in the back of the water treatment plant before moving into the park. The SEPAQ open day made it even nicer as it was free to access Boucherville park today - we even got a free pass for our next visit!

At the end of the morning, our day list reached 55 species including 10 species of warblers. The list is presented below.

Bird of the day was the Olive-sided Flycatcher observed several times and at short distance.

Thanks to all who joined making it a nice morning!  - Frédéric Hareau

PQ Field Trip Report - Saturday, September 1 - Dundee, QC

16 birders were actually happy to see some overcast skies today at the Lac St-Francois Reserve in Dundee. It was already 20 degrees C. early in the morning and the humidity was rising quickly. The clouds throughout most of the morning helped to keep the scorching rays under wraps. The birds seemed a little quiet, not expending too much energy throughout the morning. Persistence paid off though as what we thought would be a short species list turned into a respectable 50 species for this time of the year. We were also very please to welcome Mustafa Kasapoglu, from Turkey, in Montreal to visit his daughter at McGill University. Thanks to Bob and Anne Tittler for giving him a lift to the field trip. Just about all the birds he saw were lifers for him. Now on to today's results.
