Saint-Hubert: Red-Shouldered hawk - After a few fruitless detours this morning, I finally found it concealed in a line of trees behind the fence of the airport, near the intersection of rue Bachan and place de la Savane. Low down and a few hundred meters from the street, it was not easy to detect its presence at first glance. The scope was necessary.

- Raymond.Belhumeur - photos

Mont Saint-Hilaire, rue Plateaux Radisson corner: By scanning the cliff of the mountain with binoculars to 4:10 p.m. hour, I thought I found the profile of a Gyrfalcon (gray phase), perched just left the nest local Peregrines. I decide return to my car to get my scope. Just as I adjust my focus on this beautiful gyrfalcon perched in a Cedar, I heard screeching and the arrival of 2 Peregrine falcons that were attacking the Gyrfalcon. It flies away and the pursuit begins. I quickly lost sight of them headed east.  Some 5 minutes latet I heard the scheeching anew and the peregrines were attacking a Common raven

Cancellation of tomorrows "Field Trip"

It is with great disappointment that I have to cancel tomorrow's field trip. I was very much looking forward to bringing some of you on the back roads between Granville and Lachute but the current weather and road conditions as well as the forecast for tomorrow morning convinced me that it is better to cancel the field trip for tomorrow for safety reasons, and given the fact that it is quite unlikely that we would enjoy many birds.

I hope to guide a field trip in this area soon and that, in the meantime, you will enjoy these late winter conditions, which are overall amazingly beautiful and enjoyable when you don't need to drive.

My most sincere apologies, for these conditions which, as Air Canada puts it, are beyond our control.

Warmest regards,
Frédéric Hareau

Sightings for Wednesday February 22nd

There are still 2 Snowy Owls (harfangs des neiges) in the St-Clet area. The easiest to find is a male which I see in the same spot on most recent visits. Off the 201 going north from St-Clet take Ste-Julie. At the end go right and continue 100m to the first ditch on the right. The bird favours the lump of snow in the corner of the field to the left of the road where the fence ends. The snow is rapidly disappearing and I expect that they will all be off to pastures white pretty soon. - Mark Dennis

The secret lives of Whip-poor-wills and Common Nighthawks - With Greg Ran

Nightjars are amongst the most elusive birds, their camouflage makes them invisible during the day and their nocturnal habits make it so that very few have had a good look at one! Greg will present the two local nightjar species, their biology, conservation issues as well as some of his research on these species in Northwestern Ontario.

Gregory Rand has always been interested in biology and ecology. Fish, plants, insects were all of interest but in 2004 after being exposed to bird banding for the first time the birds took over! He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at McGill University in 2009 and is now pursuing his Master’s at Trent University looking. His current research focuses on the stress physiology of species at risk exposed to industrial noise.

Cost: $15 per lecture for BPQ members and $20 for non-members.

Bird Protection Quebec "Field Trip Report"

February 18th field trip to St Clet/Ste Marthe/Ste Justine was attended by 20 individuals (including several newcomers) hoping to find snowy owls and other open country winter birds. Unfortunately although we covered a large area in our convoy we struck out with regard to the snowies and the other sought after birds proved to be almost as elusive. Temperatures were relatively warm but the omnipresent breeze on these flatlands kept birders heading for their cars for warmth. Skies were overcast but gradually cleared as the morning progressed.

Our complete list of 21 species included: Red-tailed Hawk - 1, Rough-legged Hawk - 1, Wild Turkey - 11, Rock Pigeons - 30, Mourning Dove - 24, Hairy Woodpecker - 1. Sainte-Catherine: More than 300 Canada geese were present this morning at the Recre-O-Parc and one individual caught my attention.

Quite intriguing ...!  Similar in all respects to a standard size goose, it was smaller, but not consistent with the Cackling Goose that has some distinct characters, with its little round head and short bill.

After consultation, it could be a Canada Goose subspecies '' parvipes", nicknamed Lesser Canada Goose by David Sibley.

See this article posted on his blog: http://www.sibleyguides.com/2008/11/lesser-canada-goose-in-the-northeastern-us/

Sightings for Wednesday February 15th

Sainte-Catherine: Visibility was quite ugly at Recre-O-Parc, where I saw an adult Bald eagle perched on Ile aux Herons, in the morning.

The ice along the shore gradually losing ground and I have noticed more of the common species for several weeks:

Common loon (two individuals well below the lock), Ring-necked Duck (three males),  Barrow's goldeneye (one female and two males)

Lachute: I checked out the landfill near Lachute today. I saw 40 Glaucous gulls (40 goélands bourgmestres)   and seven Iceland Gulls (goélands articque) amongst the more common species. To view the fields where they loaf take the first exit for Lachute off Highway 50, go back over the highway onto Chemin Bethany. After a short while this becomes Chemin Charles-Leonard, look out for a crossroads that is Chemin Des Sources, go south for a couple of kilometers and the landfill appears on your left, keep going down the hill to view the fields, a scope is useful.

At Mirabel there was one Snowy Owl (Harfang des neiges) and four Gray Partridges (Perdrix grises) plus 100 or more Snow Buntings (plectophanes des neiges). I also saw three different Northern Gray Shrikes (Pie-grièche grise) today so they are probably on the move back north. - Mark Dennis

Sightings for Sunday February 12th

I was out with Eve Marshall around St-Clet this morning looking at Snowy Owls (Harfang des neiges) (Montee Ste-Marie, rangSte-Julie). I did a little look before she arrived and saw six, we then located at least three which gave good views, especially the last. I get the impression that the birds are on the move, I suspect that the St-Clet area is staging point as the go north, they were certainly very active today although part of that will be a response to the colder weather.

A couple of photos from today are on my blog at http://notdennis51.WordPress.com/ - Mark Dennis

GREAT BACKYARD BIRDCOUNT

February's Great Backyard Bird Count

The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is an annual four-day event that engages birdwatchers of all ages across North America. Anyone can participate, from beginners to experts. Count for as little as 15 minutes on a single day, or for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy – and it helps the birds!

This year’s count runs from Friday, February 17, through Monday, February 20. It is not too late to participate, and advance sign-up is not required. It’s as simple as counting birds at a location near you, tallying the highest number of birds of each species seen together at once, and filling out an online checklist on the GBBC website. As the weekend progresses, visit the website regularly to check out results and share photographs. It’s going to be a great weekend for birders in Canada and the United States!
