Are European goldfinches seen frequently in Quebec, or specifically in Montreal? Or is this a rare event?

They are not seen to frequently, but it seems they have been seen quite often at the Montreal Botanical Gardens this year.

Thank you for responding. That's amazing. I realize the chances of seeing one are probably quite slim, but I'm tempted to try anyhow!

Another question: I haven't visited the Botanical Gardens in Montreal in quite a few years. I don't even recall the layout. Where does one bird at the BG? Can you share some specific details about birding at the BG that might assist us in planning a daytrip? Thank you!

There are feeders set up in the Botanical Gardens, which are mostly along the road that goes around the perimeter of the gardens. The European goldfinch along with a Carolina wren have mostly been seen at the feeder in the First Nations Garden. Which is number 9 on the link below. Our club will be be there next Saturday on the 12th.
By car: from downtown Montreal, take Autoroute 40 east and Pie IX south, or Notre Dame Street East and Pie IX north. By public transport: take the Metro to Pie IX station.

Thank you for the information. I had already read about your club's outing on 12th, and we would have enjoyed joining you-- but we have other plans on that date. I look forward to reading your trip report. Do you post it on this blog? We're thinking of driving up this weekend-- the weather is going to be warm!

Thank you, Tom. I look forward to reading your report. Thank you for your assistance, too; I appreciate your help very much.
I hope you don't mind a couple more questions about birding at the Botanical Gardens. I noticed that your club's event is set to start at 8:00 on January 12. However, the BG website states that they don't open until 9:00 at this time of year. Do they allow birding on the grounds prior to the 9:00 opening time? Is there a special gate at which one pays for early admission? What time do the parking lots open? We'll probably come up Sunday. Thank you again for the information.

You can enter the Gardens before 9am if you wish we always arrive before 8am and the gate is always open. We usually park on Pie-IX just past Sherbrooke, there is and entrance right at the corner. There is also a parking lot if you turn right on Sherbrooke which is always open you just pay the machine. You don't have to pay an entrance fee in the winter unless you go into one of the buildings.
